Gone for awhile....What's new? What is the best ROM now?

Howdy!

I haven't been around for the last two months and am trying to get caught up but there are a lot of threads with new ROMs so I thought I would make a thread for people to come in and give me some suggestions.

I was on vacation for a month, then just wasn't in the habit of logging on to any forums after I got back. My Hero had Zen EXP on it but all of a sudden while on vacation it started randomly rebooting several times a day. Since I had Fresh Toast on my SD card just in case, I flashed Fresh Toast again and have been running that since.

Fresh Toast isn't as quick or fast as Zen EXP, but no random reboots either. Everything seems to work but it is just slow and I want to find something stable that is faster. A different look might be nice too.

I was thinking of the CyanogenMog 6 ROM but I was reading on XDA and it sounds like Google Navigation doesn't work well on that ROM and I need Google Navigation! :)

So what would you suggest?

Thanks!

Those are the Cyanogen Nightlies, which after the 18th, its now stable. Download the newest one (look at the dates in the middle). Dont click the one with the MD5SUM at the end of it, its nothing.

Flash it like you would any other rom.

thats the newest rom out. (nightly being usually a new one to flash every night if you want). but like i stated its now all stable.

Great, thank you! I'll flash this and give it a shot. Even though it is a "nightly" the file is the whole ROM, right? Ir do I have to flash the ROM first them the nightly as a patch?

You can start with the nightly.

Like I said tho, since the 9/18 nightly, you dont have to do every nightly, as its now stated as stable.

I had the 9/16, and then just did the 9/22 and dont plan on doing another for a little while.

This is what I did so far and love it (speed and everything).

Nandroid backup, flashed 9/22 and rebooted, flashed uncapped kernal #14 and rebooted. downloaded overclock widget and run 556mhz min and 710mhx max.

its nice. any questions just post up, we'll get ya going till your happy :)

Thank you, I was confused a little by the nightlies but your help explains it very well. So it helps to flash a new kernal with this ROM like you did?

NFX Hero 2.2 is a good and snappy 2.1 sense ROM. Has flash 10.1 installed (works kinda), friendstream, and extra goodies, plus its good on internal memory.
I may need to try that one too, but after I try CyanogenMod 6. I run Apps2sd on Fresh Toast but not all apps can be stored on the SD if the dev didn't allow for that. So sometimes internal memory is kind of important! Thanks!

It doesnt hurt to flash a new kernal. It sped mine up and helped with battery life as well. It also allows you to speed up the processor. some can get up to 768mhz, but im happy with 710. Never tried to go faster.

Apps2sd comes with cyanogen.

I guess the best advice is to try this, and also try other ones until your happy with what you get.

I plan on flashing this in the morning after I am better rested so I don't make mistakes, lol. After that I will find that kernal you flashed and I will flash that too so I can get a feel for this ROM running at it's best. I've heard good things about it so I am looking forward to trying this puppy!

Wow! This ROM really rocks! It is faster and quicker than even Zen EXP was. Loving it so far. Just getting used to some of the quirks (probably stuff I am doing wrong).

Here is another question though: In CyanogenMod Settings>Performance Settings, will tapping any of these help, and what do they do? Like "Use Compcache" and "JIT." The explanation sounds good enough, but does this really help or does it just create an area for problems?

These things will affect each phone differently, best advice I can give is enable them and see if YOU see a difference. What works for one phone, may make another phone run like crap;)

Since flashing CM6 I am having some trouble downloading and installing apps from the Market. I get the message that the app will be downloaded, but then it can take forever and not download at all. A few have downloaded but then will not install. Any ideas?

Also, to flash a uncapped kernal do I just download one and flash it from recovery?

OK, one more question.....Do I need to get the CyanogenMod custom RA image? I tried a couple of things in the Rom Manager and I have to have the CM image to use those features, but is there any other reason to have it?

Try clearing data in manage applications for market and then reboot phone. I just flashed the 9/26 gapps and my market was saying 'staring download' and never did anything. After clear data and reboot, everything worked just fine;)

Flash the uncapped kernels from recovery, make sure you wipe Davlik cache and cache(if you have clear cache option)

Rom Manger is good to have for 'Fix Permissions', in case of force close problems, press fix permissions and reboot

OK, I will try clearing data for market and see if that works.

Which kernel would you suggest? Are the ones on xda up to date or are there better and more stable ones? It's difficult to just pick one by chance from the list on xda. :(

To use ROM Manager I need to use the custom CM recovery image, right? I am getting a lot of FC's with ADW and also with Google system.

Dec just put out 2 new kernels on 9/26, one is a stable kernel and the other is a BFS

I don't believe you have to use Koush's clockworkmod recovery to 'Fix Permissions'. Press 'fix permissions' and after it's done reboot

Just did the "Fix Permissions" thing, hopefully that helps with the FC's.

Thanks for the tip with the kernels, I'll check them out.

Nfinite's newest stock rom, I'm not even ovetclocked and It's simply awesome.
Do you have a link for this rom? It is a 2.1 ROM?

Has everyone gone away from ZenEXP? I have not seen much action there... I am still running the latest.

Fenga, What are the main issues with CM6 - strongly considering that one. Still running it? I can't belive that it is faster than ZenEXP was (it is now slow).

Good thread here.

CM6 is the only 2.2 (Froyo) ROM for the Sprint Hero now. Here is a link to the nightly ROM updates, so just choose one like Sept. 28 (the latest one) and download it, then flash as ususal after a wipe (davlik too). You don't need to download the MD5 text file.

CM6 really is faster and quicker than ZenEXP. I was having issues with ZenEXP rebooting 2-3 times a day so that was annoying.

The issues I have had with CM6 are getting cleared up with the help I have had in this thread, so I am really happy with CM6. This ROM lets you tweak it more than any other I have tried so far. If you don't use Apps2sd with ZenEXP then you will love the way you can move your apps to the SD card even without having Apps2sd.

Thanks is there a homepage for the CM6 Hero Project? Is it really stable enough for daily use? What else is not working?

Is the UI nice or do you have to add a launcher?

I have the old RA 1.2 - Will I need ClockWorkRecoveryMod?

Does someone have the link to Nfinite's rom? Is this any better?
I don't know of a homepage just for CM6 and the Sprint Hero. Here is CM's site, but I don't think the forum there is better than this one.

CyanogenMod | Android Community Rom based on FroYo.

The necessary files and help you or I need are easily found here. Sometimes a link will go to xda since they are very technical over there.

I really like the UI with CM6 and that there are a lot of settings to adjust things and tweak. The ROM comes with the apps ADW Launcher, ROM Manager, and Spare Parts included.

So far CN6 has been very stable for me. Like I said, the issues I was having with many FC's has about disappeared since I did the "Fix Permissions" thing. I haven't found anything not working. The GPS seems to lock on for me and stays there.

You can go with ClockWorkRecoveryMod but I don't know how well that works with other ROMs. I have recovery image 1.6.2 and it has worked well with each ROM I have tried.

Sorry, I don't have a link to Nfinite's ROM.
