Help Interesting problem, no media volume.

First post here guys, having some issues with my ally and curious if anyone here is experiencing the same issues I am.

My ally has no media volume, though it plays media through the headphone jack. This is rather irritating as phone calls are media also. I can for example hear phone calls on speaker phone, or through the headphone jack, though no sound is played through the built in earpiece.

I have done a hard reset of the phone, but this did not solve the problem. I don't feel the problem is hardware related as the phone will still play notifications and ringtones.

Has anyone heard of this issue with the ally, or with android 2.1 for that matter?

Sounds hardware related to me. If no sound is coming out of the ear piece on the phone, but it does come out the speaker and headphones, says bad ear piece speaker to me.

Take it to Verizon, they'll do a quick 1min test and either tell you to wait like 30min so hardware tech's can look at it, or most of the time they just give you a new one.

Thank you for the reply's guys. I got the phone at Best Buy, took it back and they replaced it with a new one no questions asked. I hope this phone does not experience the same issue as the last one.

I'll tell you right now what it was. The headphone jack. I have spent 2 hrs trying things and I just read something about it sticking on the motorola droid. I plugged them in and took them out and it worked. I had wrote new files to the system for audio, and recovered the phone 4 times and nothing fixed it. Oy vey!

Interesting, sounds logical. I thought about the possibility of the headphone jack "sticking" in some manner, though numerous attempts plugging in and removing headphones did not solve the problem. I'll keep this tip in mind should the issue come up on my new ally. Thanks alot.

Yea, I have used the headphone jack once.. And it wasn't even today. Yours could have just been worse.

In my case, ADW caused the problem. I don't know how or why yet, but after installing ADW and setting it to my default home, I stopped getting sound out of the phone speaker. It looks like ADW is trying to hook into the headphone jack somehow, because it also started launching my media player when I plugged the headphones in, which I really don't like.

I switched back to the stock android home, and I have sound through the phone speaker again. So, if anyone else gets this behavior and you're running ADW, try reverting to the stock home and see if that helps.

I tried restarting the phone, clearing my cache and dalvik cache, pulling the battery - pretty much everything shy of a factory reset. Nothing worked until I switched back to the stock android launcher. Then the behavior stopped; I got my sound back and the media player stopped launching automatically when I inserted the headphones.

It's possible that it was some sort of interaction with something else, but in my case adw was definitely the variable. The behavior started when I installed it and stopped when I uninstalled it.

Nope. I figured the problem out about 10 minutes before I posted and I use the phone for work, so I'm not going to mess with it now. I may try reinstalling it this evening to see what happens, but to be honest I'm leaning toward keeping the stock launcher. I prefer adw's interface and memory footprint, but the stock launcher has never given me any trouble and I need the phone to behave predictably.

Are you talking about the built in speaker on the back of the phone, or the earpiece? The problem I and others had was with the phones earpiece, not the speaker. I was not using any third party launcher btw.

The lack of a dust cover on the Ally headphone jack has put me in the exact same position twice since I got the phone. What works for me is to use some Pro Gold (now called De-Oxit) contact cleaner on the plug of my headphones and work it into the jack a couple times. I think it gets a dust particle in there and holds the contact open which would normally divert sound away from the phone's speaker. The fluid helps clean that away.

However, I have also seen times when the Ally simply stopped sounding sounds, period. Always fixes itself with a reboot. This was before I rooted too, so is probably an issue with the phone itself. This first happened to me immediately after the first OTA update they released. I ended up having to factory reset that time to get the sound back.
