Root Rooting my Mytouch 3G

i used universal androot method its really easy, just install the app, open it and click root. my phone rooted in about 3 seconds i believe, now i have 2.2. If you use this method your warranty wont be voided, and you will also be able to get the official 2.2 OTA update if it ever comes.

I was wondering if the androot would work. Ive been looking at rooting my girlfriends mytouch 3g for a while now. Saw I would have to do the gold card method and that didnt look like fun. Will be downloading Androot this weekend and doing this.

my MyTouch is still slow as f*ck, even with Cyanogen 6.0.

CM6 is SLOWER than stock because it's a bigger OS. That's like putting windows 7 on an old computer. Of course it's slower!

I have no idea what my issue is, but i keep getting "there is a problem parsing the package" wtf? Damn you Tmo and sending me a phone preinstalled with 1.6 and closing my precious security loophole. And I had gotten so good at the old way too :(

Uhmm, just apply sappimg.nbh to downgrade back to 1.5, then use flashrec to install amon ra's recovery and proceed as normal.

hi was wondering if i unroot my phone (2.2.1) to (1.5) then root it, will it run much faster? after rooting can i update to 2.2.1 and will it be faster or still sluggish like everybody is complaining about?

Regardless of what you do to the phone, Android 2.x simply is going to be too much for a phone like the MT3G to handle. It's older hardware that wasn't meant to handle the demands of the newer software. If I were in your shoes, I would roll it back to a build no higher than 1.6. CM5 is a great ROM for the MT3G, and you wont suffer the sluggishness that comes with 2.x.

thanks swizz, if i do this will i lose any compatibility with the market and the apps that i was able to run when i had 2.2.1? or should i just send my phone back for a refund because this isn't worth it?

You may lose some combatibility with apps. That decision is made by the developer and what minimum SDK they wish to allow.

oh ok i saw that on the market sidebar ...on which versions. this is really bad for me then. do know of any roms that will make the 2.2.1 run faster though? im assuming if i go in this path i'd have to the a root thing? do you know after rooting, then updating to 2.2.1, will it still run the same?

All that back and forth will accomplish nothing. The only thing that matters is what firmware you end up with. Furthermore, if you roll back to 1.5 you'll have an old-ass radio that will have worse reception.

Here's your best bet.

Stay on stock 2.2.1.
Root with SuperOneClick.
Delete any bloatware you don't want from /system/app using es file explorer or root explorer.
Install clockworkmod or Amon Ra recovery (I actually prefer Amon Ra).
Flash ezterry's 614 kernel that's compatible with the newest spl/radio.
While still in recovery, do a wipe data/factory reset.
Reboot and WAIT. Let it sit there for a full 10 minutes before you sign into google and start setting up. I'm not joking, this phone is slow, that extra time HELPS.
Once you're up and running use setcpu to set your default profile to 614 max/528 min.

Back when I had my mt3g, that setup was the best that phone ever ran or ever could run unless you want to go try cm4 or Dwang's Donut, both of which are Android 1.6. CM5 is android 2.1, btw...
