Internal Memory Still Disappearing....

Well my Hero still has a disappearing memory problem. The top five memory hogs that I have are as follows:

HTC Mail at 23mb
Maps at 9mb
Contacts Storage at 8mb
ES File Explorer at 6.5mb
Quick Office at 4.0mb

I have a great Cache Cleaner that the last time recovered me back to 40mb of memory but now I'm down to 18mb with everything and it still seems to be disappearing. Any idea's? I don't sync with Facebook or Google. I store NO mail in either of my two mail accounts and I use Handcent for me txting and I don't save anything there that I'm aware of. This phone just has a habit of consuming memory.

This phone is running Damage Controls last 2.1 rom too.

Any Help would be appreciated...........

Lisa

Seems like you are running into the same problem as you had before:(

The only thing I would recommend would be to delete data in manage applications, just beware if you do that you will more than likely need to set up your email accounts again. So, make sure you have the incoming and outgoing servers set up written down and it should only take a few minutes to redo.

You can delete data in maps also to clear some space;)

Well I uninstalled ES File explorer and recovered 6.5mb of memory. So that was a start. I had already installed Root Explorer and it's a pretty small program running at 496 KB. So I have enough file explorer there. There appears to be no data in the Maps program so nothing to delete there. The Mail program is still the champion memory hog at 20.64mb of data. But I have gone after that already and that just seems what this program needs to function.

Now on the Apps2sd question. Yes my rom has that capability and no I am not using it. I understand that it probably would be a good thing but I was going to take my extra original memory card and try the reformat but I need to get all the instructions for how to do this and print it out. I guess I would find this in the "all things root" section but I just haven't done this. But memory issues don't hit the forums that often so I figure I have just one simple problem that I just haven't figured out yet. But it's like I have a parasite that is eating away at it as my memory is constantly going down and I'm constantly cleaning it out but slowly but surely I'm loosing ground on this issue. A month or so ago when I asked for help I was able to get back a total of 41MB of memory. Today the best I can do is 26MB and I'm removing programs now at this point.

It's kind of discouraging as I have a friend with a stock Droid and she has 140MB of internal memory and she has installed games and everything else on her phone. I have a very lean and clean phone and I'm fighting memory all the time. I just don't get it.

Maybe try CM6 or something newer like a zen rom or NFX, I have 25 apps installed plus I have the option of apps 2 sd(don't use it yet on CM6) and I have over 120 mb of free space

I have around 70 apps installed and still have 91.5 mb free space. Running CM6 (9/24 nightly) with BFS #11 uncapped kernel, and am not using Apps2sd because CM6 let's you move apps to the SD card without it.

heeeyyyyyyyy!! i was wondering about that!! so you don't have to partition your sd card if you choose to move your apps to sd card? i mean i've never used the Apps2sd but CM6 does give that option..so it's safe to use?

it's crazy when i was reading your post on how you had 70 apps installed with 90+ MB left!!

Yup, you can move apps to your SD card without having to partition your card if you are using CM6.

First, go into CyanogenMod Settings>Application Settings>And check the box "Allow application moving." Tap "Install location" and choose "External."

Now go back to "Settings" (for the phone) and tap "Applications." Make sure the box at the top "Unknown sources" is checked.

Tap "Manage Applications." After your applications load, go down to each one you want to run from your SD card and tap the application. This takes you to a screen and you will see in the middle/right of the screen (below "Storage") where you tap "Move to SD card." (a few apps would not let me move the app to my SD card)

Tap that and wait a moment for the button to refresh. It will now read "Move to phone," showing you that the app was moved to your SD card and you can tap again to move the app back to your phone.

You will also notice the amount of KB or MB for the app under "Storage" has gone down. Some apps release more space than others but the app still needs some of the app to remain on your phone so it can be accessed (like in the cache) and find the app on your SD card. Simply repeat this for each app you want to move to your SD card.

Thanks for the nice info:):)

give it to andy!! :D

where did you get your 16gb card from? i'm on 8 gb with 2 gb left..lookin for a cheap good 16gb
I got this one from Amazon - Amazon.com: Topram 16GB Class 4 MicroSDHC Card with SD Adapter and R10B Micro USB Flash Card Reader / Writer.: Electronics

I never used a Topram card before, but it has very good reviews. I went down to a class 4 from the class 6 on my 8GB card because several people told me that was easily fast enough. I load it with music, a few videos from YouTube, pictures, and have moved almost all of my apps to the card. It works great!

I am still having problems with disappearing memory.

I turned the phone on this morning at 6:45 am and went to Menu > settings > running services and what I had was

google services framework 7.1MB
Voicemail (sprint) 5.6MB
Android keyboard 5.1MB

at the bottom of the screen it listed the memory as;
Other 36mb in 4 Available 68mb + 55mb in 15

Now at 10:00 pm I have the same three running services but my memory has drastically changed to;
Other 39mb in 4 Avail: 16mb + 93mb in 15

All I have done today was use google maps once, and make about 4 or 5 calls and check my email about 6 times.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Has your internal memory changed any?

Howdy folks. I'm happy to see I'm not the only one running into 'Mail' taking up a ton of space.
I'm running the NFX rom and the regular UI.

I've deleted all non-essential mail, all sent and trash folders too. but to no avail! In the app manager it still shows mail data over 30mb :(

Anyone know how to delete that 'data' from the mail program??
Thanks y'all!

For your Gmail app? Sure, just go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications. After your apps load, tap the "All" tab. Scroll down to Gmail and tap it. You will see a screen with application info for Gmail. Just over half-way down tap the button that reads "Clear data." A popup will warn you this will clear all data. Tap "OK" and it will take a couple seconds to clear. Then you are good to go.

But, won't that wipe out your connection data and you'll have to go through reestablishing the account and all that? All my other programs have way less then 10mb of memory. The Google Maps has 9.1mb and they go down from there. Mail is a big hog and I don't know why. I store NO mail on my phone.

One of my thoughts was either this is a virus of some kind that eats the memory or when I do "updates" that some how this is being stored in memory. But my memory is constantly going away. I have a great cache cleaner and when I first tackled this problem about eight weeks ago I got just up to 40mb of internal memory. And then again like clock work it's disappeared down to 20mb now and it's always dipping under that. I picked up my friends LG last night and look at her memory and there was 125mb free there. I was totally amazed.

Good to keep this thread alive as someone may discover the culprit so we all can fix this problem...........

Nope, not for Gmail. This is for my pop mail account using the mail app.
I don't see a way to clear out the data from the mail.
I appreciate the help!

Thanks for the suggestion but I am real tight on house keeping. I do not store any email, text or sms stuff on my phone. But my memory slowly manages to fill up and I have less and less available.

I know that the ultimate recommendation is to wipe and start over but I just don't have to time to do all that again so I will suffer with these problems until I can upgrade and then I'm staying away from HTC............

2 hours of your time and you could be running something new;)
