data plan changes

I've been thinking of getting either a Droid X or 2 sometime soon and was wondering about the changes Verizon will be making with their data plans.

I read an article about tomorrow's change but I'm not sure what that exactly means for smartphones - would a Droid be eligible for the $10/25mb plan? I'm fine with paying the $30/month for unlimited for now but I imagine that I'll be on wifi for 90% of the time, so I'm looking forward to a cheaper tiered plan. If I were to get on the $30 unlimited plan now, would I be able to switch down to a cheaper tiered plan in the middle of my contract once it becomes available?

If I just wanted to get an unlimited plan for now, is there any advantage for me to get the phone today before the new plans go into effect?

As far as I have found - there is no definite plans for Verizon to switch to tiered data plan pricing too soon.

However - if they follow AT&T's model - your phone will be eligible for whatever you want to pay for. Verizon did state, though, that they were going to do something 'a little different' than AT&T.

It's very likely that they wont make any current subscribers change their plans until they re-sign their contracts or change their plans. I would recommend that you make the jump now - get a phone and unlimited plan.

I'm going to email Verizon and tell them that I love their unlimited service - it's the whole reason I switched from AT&T. I HATE the new tiered plans. Just another way for them to make money. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. My brother and I worked out a plan because he needs a new phone too: I'd get them to fix my enV3, which is having some issues, use his update to buy myself some type of Droid, and he'd switch to my enV3. Is that doable? Would he have to pay anything for data on that if he were to switch today?

Also, I know this is the wrong forum for this, but does anybody know if the Droid 2 could get an update like the Droid Incredible did to shoot 720p video?

I was with AT&T when they changed to tiered data, they didn't care if you were changing devices or upgrading if you had unlimited then they made sure that you kept it.

I hope that big red at least adopts that aspect.

If tiered means you'll be paying less, than I'm sure they will let you keep unlimited.

I guess in the long run if they offered tiers then upped the unlimited to $35/mo I'd still pay for it. My data use goes up every month lol

AT&T Will allow you to keep your unlimited plan until it's time to renew contract - or you get a new device. They have this in their FAQ's.

Verizon has no new data plans yet. - They are considering - but other than that - Not yet. According to press releases anyways....
@Dankeys4: Verizon has a list on their wireless website of phones that they consider to be 'Smart Phones' (requiring unlimited data plan), "Multimedia Phones" (requiring $10 and up data plan), and 'basic messaging phones'. Check out the list for the type of phone you are interested in getting/using and see what they will require.

Yes it has been confirmed that they are going to tiered data, but I think the point they are trying to make is that there is no set date for it at this time. I would venture a guess that we won't hear anything about it (pricing data, implementation date, etc.) until after LTE is rolled out.

Btw, the multimedia phone option (feature phones with a required data plan at $9.99 for 25mB is going away this fall (I believe in November). After that there will be 2 classes of phones on Verizon, feature phone (no data required) & smartphone (data required). The only thing that sucks is that any multimedia phone model that did require data will still require it even after the changeover. So if I want to go back to my old Moto Entice, I'd have to pay the $9.99 a month. I believe I read that on Engadget.
