Help might send it back..

TBH I am considering sending my Desire back after 4 days ownership..
I am within the 7 day cooling off period with Vodafone so that is ok..
Basically, it's the god damn battery life...!!!
I have done everything I should to prolong the battery life when I first got it, and after charging from empty to 100% overnight (9pm-6am) before going off to work the thing is bleeping empty at 13:30 in the afternoon. this was yesterday, with minimal use (no wi-fi turned on, 1 short call, a few txts, a few email checks) and today it was dead by 15:00 after the same charge and usage, I managed to phone Vodafone tech help before it died again today and they said, charge it from empty for 4 hours only I did that tonight (17:45-21:45) since taking off charge tonight at 100% after 4 hours charge I have taken 3 pics on the camera, uploaded 1 to fb and sent 1 text. wifi is off and basic wallpaper, apart from that it has sat on the table untouched and it is now on 79%
Does this sound normal?? if so I shall be returning the phone and cancelling my contract as this is rubbish, what is the point of a smartphone where it is less than useless on battery life...maybe i just have a dud battery.. but if Vodafone send me out a new battery as they said they would then i'll be over my 7 day cooling off period and STUCK with this thing. basically a flash phone with a constant flat battery.. I have tried the juice defender app and the other battery saving apps with no improvement. Apologies for the rant but i'm a bit hacked off with it, as I can sit with it in my hand doing nothing and watch the battery %age go down as I watch it..
Any ideas would be warmly recieved.

Unfortunately the battery does take a few weeks to bed in. Screen brightness is a killer. Turn it down. Also, apps that sync cause s lot of drain. Anything that is syncing hourly Is a big no. Decrease all sync frequenies. I get from 8 am to 10:30 daily and never get below 30% with heavy use.

Oh and if you are running task killers, remove them

Welcome to the world of smart phones - if you want to use them as intended you will be charging it every day...having said that, yours sounds a little bad so as said remove all sync options (or at least sync less often) and remove any task killers (and juice defender as it's been shown to worsen battery life!!)

A few weeks after having my Desire I started having battery problems. I think it was down to a buggy version of the Facebook application. I managed to fix it but can't remember how now - sorry!

Now I use mine quite a lot on a typical day:
2 hours surfing/playing around
30 mins mp3 playback,
15 mins phone calls
a few texts

and I have it set to sync gmail, calendar, bookmarks, rss feeds, facebook, ebay and probably a few things more.

I have wifi on for about 4 hours a day.

By the time I plug in when I go to bed it's usually down to 30%.

If I know I'm going to be away from a charger for a while I turn 3g 'Mobile Network' off and Wifi off. This makes a HUGE difference. It lasts for 2-3 days in this case.

Thank you guys for the suggestions. A few bits to ask though, how do I turn off the 3g (i know how to turn off the wifi) all the bits that sync are manual, ie twitter and facebook.
how do change the sync frequency for the emails i get though, i have aol, yahoo and live updates throughout the day. tbh i may just delete the aol and yahoo as all i get is junk anyway, all my main emails are on live.com
I don't get emails from gmail, can i turn this off.
the facebook with the battery issue, how can i check what version it is, and is it just a case of an update?
finally... is there an easy way to sort out my phonebook, i dont want to link with my fb account, i just want a few numbers in my phonebook, not all the ones in my fb account.
Sorry about the wordy post, I'm just trying to iron out the issues i have, and you guys seem to be very knowledgeable in this field... thankyou

OK, if you go into accounts and sync (from settings) you can change what parts of gmail sync, so just go into gmail and untick everything (except contacts if you are using contact sync)..

Just search and download facebook from the market, then theres nothing to worry about.

If you go into the email app settings, there is an option to change update interval (or something like that).

In people, go to menu>view and untick what you dont want to see. Back in accounts and sync, go to facebook and untick contacts sync.
