App downloads not working

Hello all, first post and of course its because I am having an issue. I searched around and can not find anything related to this, forgive me if I missed it.

I finally convinced my wife to move up from her 3 year old Razr, convinced her it would be great, cool apps, other smartphone functionality etc. It took 2 months to convince her but once she saw the eris she was sold.

Sure enough first attempts to download apps - any apps and no luck. So we found facebook, select start download and get the message starting download and it just spins and spins but never downloads. I have poked around the manual, HTC's site, and I cant find anything that would appear to be causing the download blockage. I even started the download and let it go for two hours and nothing, still staying at starting download.

Any advice would be appreciated.

p.s. I have not attempted to download using wifi yet, that was going to be tonight but I would still like to be able to troubleshoot the standard method anyway even if wifi downloads are successful.

Thanks in advance.

cancel all downloads you've started. restart the phone reopen market it might ask to enter your password due to syncing issues. this was the problem with mine. but somtimes it also it confused and doesn't download the apps till you try again. happened with my g1 i'd start the download it would sit there saying starting download then i'd would restart the download and magically it would start.

Hey Ripple,
The same situation happened to me yesterday with my first day with the Eris also...our situations mirror each other quite a bit...I got my wife to upgrade from her Razr as well..*laughz*
Anyway, I was at work when I was trying to d/l stuff from Market, and had the same problem for a couple hours where it didn't d/l anything...I had about 10 apps all saying they were waiting to download and...nothing...
But, I deleted them all, and when I tried to do them one by one (maybe 3 hours later) it just clicked and started working....
Not much help in a solution, but at least you know it happened to someone else and it might fix itself...
Good luck...
Maxx...

You have to love quick replies. She did not have a gmail account and the verizon rep had her set one up in the store and it is set up with the phone. So I assume this is what you are asking, if not I mght need a tad more information.

As I am writing this I am reading the additional replies. I will tell you we did cancel the downloads, and tried again the first night (sunday) but she got home late last night and I didnt get a chance to try this morning.

I will clear the download list tonight and reboot and try from there.

THanks for the quick replies and I will tell you I plan to visit here often, I am intrigued by the phone and an already sorry I didnt say what the heck to the BOGO offer and take the second for myself. I have a BB Tour provided by my employer but just reading here today I am starting to have a touch of Droid envy. :(

I am almost positive, even for free apps, you have to have google checkout on your google account (the one that the phone was registered too in store) to d/l anything.

Someone plz chime in if im wrong

to do this ripple, go to google and login to your google account on your computer. then find google checkout and sign up for it (WHILE LOGGED INTO YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNT)

it is free, it's like the goog equivalent of paypal, this is how they handle paid apps...but it is still required before you can download anything.

no google checkout is only for paid apps i had the g1 before paid apps came out and the market worked fine.

This won't solve your problem, but downloads generally tend to be faster on wife rather than over the network. Which is true of most things, if wifi is available it'll be faster.

I am going to assume you meant wifi :D

Of course the Google checkout information is most likely a good thing to know (and set up anyway) since it just a matter of time before a paid app is desired.

Well this was the solution - didn't set up a checkout account but just rebooted the phone and restarted the download and bang it worked. Odd but this was the solution, two apps downloaded and installed.

Thanks for the assistance, now on to the good stuff!
