New Version of Car Home with Customization

All this and they still don't include an option to automatically turn on speakerphone when docked. But it's good enough for me to uninstall the 3rd party app I've been using.

Tasker is your friend. It'll do this for you.

Anyway, I played with it last night and I'm actually going to try it out today to see how well it works. The concept I'm thrilled with.

Droid1, 2.2, unrooted. Found it 20 minutes ago on Market. Shortcuts can be set to applications, direct dials, and directions/navigation shortcuts, as well as the standard Car Home apps. Customizations include choosing wallpaper, color of icons, hiding status bar at top. Also can be set to turn on with bluetooth (haven't tried yet). Have mine set to a black mesh background with orange icons. Cool. (sorry, no screen pics :-(

I can get Tasker to launch the Carhome app when I plug in the USB cable, but is there anyway to differentiate between PC-USB connection and Car Accessory USB connection? I'm guessing that's not possible? Alternatively, what's the best method of getting a shortcut to the app on my HTC Sense screen?

Long press the homescreen -> widgets -> task. That will launch Widget Configure in Tasker. Push the + in the bottom left -> App -> load app -> car home. Then push make widget at the bottom of the screen.

I've been doing that with Tasker for quite a while. It's just disappointing to see such an obvious feature go unaddressed. Google comes out with some great stuff, as I'm sure anyone here would agree, but at times it seems like they operate in a bubble, with no exposure to real-world use of their products.

It might be because they did include an option to auto-launch Car Home when a bluetooth connection is established with your phone. In my case I have a Sabra Cruiser I connect to automatically, so I don't need the speakerphone to kick in by way of Car Home, my connection handles it anyway. Still, it would be nice if they added auto-speakerphone as a user-selectable option.

As big as Google is, their resources are limited, and what they work on is all a matter of priorities I guess. Give the popularity of bluetooth headsets and the fact that a detectable car dock is not necessarily available for every device, I can see activating car mode on bluetooth connect having a higher priority.

Also works for creating a widget icon for WidgetLocker. Is there any way to customize the icon created? I get the standard blue circle with a question mark and no name underneath, which looks kinda tacky.

I'm not sure what icons are available through Tasker, but if you use Better Cut then long press the home screen -> Shortcuts -> Better Cut -> All Activities -> Car home. You can use the default car home icon or choose any other icon that you have available.
