Besides all this sounding like a commercial for ARCHOS. You still cant do ARCHOS tablet vs a Tablet that has built in cellular. Apples n Oranges. What if i require cellular on my tablet? my option is to tether right?
So now i have my $200 EVO, My $300 ARCHOS and my $70 Sprint plan x 24 = $1540. That $1000 2 years doesn't sound so bad vs $2040 by having 2 devices.
Personally i like the Archos 101 and will be getting one, but you still have to be realistic on what you can compare each tablet to.

I actually grew to hate Archos due to the Euro sound cap law that Archos adheres to. The features are facts, though. US Tab's have built-in 3G, but no phone function (euros versions do). Why pay data for two devices? My Incredible covers that and I can USB tether with it (carry my phone around anyways, so not an extra thing to carry).

Archos 101 and my Incredible are a far cheaper option than Archos 101 and Galaxy Tab from VZW. Apparently data will either be $20 or $30 a month and the actual two year contratc price depends on if $20 or $30- either way they will get their $1,000

Most of the "U.S. tabs" that you reference are actually built in the far east At this time we know that the Samsung tab will be tied to U.S. cellular carriers. Dell's tablets are being sold through AT&T. Mostly what we know of the Motorola tab are, at this time, rumors. Nearly nothing has been heard yet regarding the Toshiba tablet. Velocity Micro will sell the Cruz tablet through it's retail network.

Tethering can be hit-or-miss for some smartphones. Some carriers such as Verizon don't always support this natively. To get this to work on some Smartphones, you may need to root the phone and add third party app's. To some this might not be their "cup of tea". Then, of course, you always have the risk that if you push too much data through the phone the carrier might get suspicious and start scrutinizing your monthly usage.

I agree that tethering is very possible to do... It just may not be the optimal choice for everyone.

I am referring to US "Tab's" (Galaxy Tabs). I went plural, since there is the 2gb carrier version and supposed to be 16gb and 32gb wifi only non-carrier versions.

I would still want to see someone who has 'hand's on' experience (especially tethering with a Verizon Smartphone, e.g. Droid) with one before I invested, although I am very interested in the 101.

I will hopefully be that person in the near future as I've had a pre-order in with J&R since 9/20... and I already have my ZT-180 Tablets tethered to my AdHoc tethering Moto Droids running 2.2...

It's looking more and more like it will be sometime mid to late November, as there has been absolutely zero news regarding the Gen8 Archos tablets(the good ones anyway) in the past 3 weeks, all I know is that is not a good sign for an impending release.

It doesn't surprise me that folks over there are Archos FanBoys as it is The Archos Fan Site but boy they aren't really so friendly to newbies making comments over there... they seem to think if you have low post count you couldn't possibly know anything about Android, Archos, or anything related...

I had been fully expecting to receive the 101 with 2.1u1 loaded as all I had initially read said (upgradeable to 2.2) but since a lot of places mention 2.2 only so you might be right that they decided to wait till they were ready with 2.2 and thus a longer wait...

I'm definitely getting the 70 with the 250GB hard drive. My current Archos is slow and has a resistive touchscreen making it a bit frustrating to use for anything other than music. The 70 has a much better processor, OS and screen. I'm pretty pumped.

Price drop may not happen as soon as you think. The device is so hot that Tigerdirect offers it $25 above sug. retail.

Nothing on the market now or in the next 6 months will touch the Archos 70/101 features or price point.

I'm going to CES again this year. I will report back what I find.

Any update on tethering capability for those of you who have an Archos 101 in hand? I tether my BB Torch to my laptop and it works well, would really like to do this when I get my hands on a 101 as well.

I use Wireless tether (rooted) on my EVO and simply turn on wifi on the Archos to tether like if I was connecting to my home internet via wifi. : shrugs:
