Pricing rumors from At&t and also VZW rep chatter suggests the total cost for these devices will be around $1,000 after two years of use. Also, though the price point of the sub $200 devices is compelling, you could get the 8gb 7" for $275 and the 10" for $333. In regards to the Tab and other higher end options looming, the Archos tabs

Besides an arm 8 1ghz chipset, Froyo, Flash 10, 8gb/16gb built-in, capacitive display and about one third the price of the Tab:

Other confirmed features (this list is for the 10")

Basically, this is what you see on your product screen, but ten times bigger. With its TV output, the ARCHOS 101 internet tablet displays every Android***8482; sceen on your wide screen TV*. You can then browse your files or the Internet from your couch. And guess how immersed in your 3D games you could be using the device as a steering-wheel! This is just staggering!

Besides all this sounding like a commercial  for ARCHOS. You still cant do ARCHOS tablet vs a Tablet that has built in cellular. Apples n Oranges. What if i require cellular on my tablet? my option is to tether right?
So now i have my $200 EVO, My $300 ARCHOS and my $70 Sprint plan x 24 = $1540. That $1000 2 years doesn't sound so bad vs $2040 by having 2 devices. :)
Personally i like the Archos 101 and will be getting one, but you still have to be realistic on what you can compare each tablet to.

They were taken from the Archos feature page, so kind of are a commercial.

I actually grew to hate Archos due to the Euro sound cap law that Archos adheres to. The features are facts, though. US Tab's have built-in 3G, but no phone function (euros versions do). Why pay data for two devices? My Incredible covers that and I can USB tether with it (carry my phone around anyways, so not an extra thing to carry).

Archos 101 and my Incredible are a far cheaper option than Archos 101 and Galaxy Tab from VZW. Apparently data will either be $20 or $30 a month and the actual two year contratc price depends on if $20 or $30- either way they will get their $1,000 ;)

added:

I wonder if Samsung and the carriers will be pressured by Archos and other competition this fall and winter and drop theri prices? Nah.

Unfortunately Rushmore this might be a bit of a generalization. Most of the "U.S. tabs" that you reference are actually built in the far east At this time we know that the Samsung tab will be tied to U.S. cellular carriers. Dell's tablets are being sold through AT&T. Mostly what we know of the Motorola tab are, at this time, rumors. Nearly nothing has been heard yet regarding the Toshiba tablet. Velocity Micro will sell the Cruz tablet through it's retail network.

Tethering can be hit-or-miss for some smartphones. Some carriers such as Verizon don't always support this natively. To get this to work on some Smartphones, you may need to root the phone and add third party app's. To some this might not be their "cup of tea". Then, of course, you always have the risk that if you push too much data through the phone the carrier might get suspicious and start scrutinizing your monthly usage.

I agree that tethering is very possible to do... It just may not be the optimal choice for everyone.

I am referring to US "Tab's" (Galaxy Tabs). I went plural, since there is the 2gb carrier version and supposed to be 16gb and 32gb wifi only non-carrier versions.

I would still want to see someone who has 'hand's on' experience (especially tethering with a Verizon Smartphone, e.g. Droid) with one before I invested, although I am very interested in the 101.

I will hopefully be that person in the near future as I've had a pre-order in with J&R since 9/20... and I already have my ZT-180 Tablets tethered to my AdHoc tethering Moto Droids running 2.2...

I should say rushmore and I will probably race for that privelidge as we both seem to be spending equal time over watching the Archosforum also :)

Ditto, but when I try to point some things out, some of the (perhaps) Archos fanboys get up in arms. I mean no harm

Unless a person needs the 3G or GPS, the Archos 7" and 10" tablets are half the price, so seem simple the simple choice.

irishpride, considering not one Archos device has been shown with 2.2 yet, I would say November seems more likely than October.

It doesn't surprise me that folks over there are Archos FanBoys as it is The Archos Fan Site :) but boy they aren't really so friendly to newbies making comments over there... they seem to think if you have low post count you couldn't possibly know anything about Android, Archos, or anything related...

I had been fully expecting to receive the 101 with 2.1u1 loaded as all I had initially read said (upgradeable to 2.2) but since a lot of places mention 2.2 only so you might be right that they decided to wait till they were ready with 2.2 and thus a longer wait...

First post... pop

Thinking hard about a 70, and the teather potential is even more appealing. I have to think that after the supply catches up (and the holidays are past) that we're likely to see a price drop. At 275 I'm excited, at 215... I'll take two.

Price drop may not happen as soon as you think. The device is so hot that Tigerdirect offers it $25 above sug. retail.

Nothing on the market now or in the next 6 months will touch the Archos 70/101 features or price point.

I'm going to CES again this year. I will report back what I find.
