Help charging issues.

H, I just got the x10a. I have some questions about the process of charging the phone.

With my last 2 phones, an k850 and a xperia x1a i learned to charge the phone every night. I arrived at home, plugged the phones to their chargers , sleep. Wake up, went to work at 7, battery was at 100% every morning.

Now with the x10a, i arrive at home, battery is almost at 40% aprox, plug the phone to the charger, and go to sleep, wake up at the same time and battery is always at 60~70%, with the cable and back of phone running hot. Yesterday went to see the phone status at 11pm, battery was at 90%, went to sleep, wake up at 4am checked the phone and battery was at 52%, so instead of charging, was discharging, is this normal behavior? I removed the battery and put it on again and the charge jumped to 85%.

All of this is normal?

Have you installed any apps or widgets, cos sometimes a rogue one will do terrible things to your battery.

It might be worth putting it in airplane mode and charging it just to check whether its the battery not taking the charge properly. If it charges OK in airplane mode then its something in the system that is not letting the phone sleep and is therefore draining the juice out of it.

It might also be worth doing a repair/reset on it via PC Companion or Sony Ericsson Update Service, both packages are available from the support section of their website. It will wipe your phone so make sure you have your contacts saved to sd or synced or both. You can then start from fresh and if you have installed apps, reinstall them one at a time from the market and give it a few hours watching the battery each time you put one on there.

If the battery is getting very hot it could be faulty. Your last resort is as Cubz suggested take it back to your retailer/SE/carrier for it to be looked at.

here it is my graph for the last day, plugged the charger aroung 4pm batt was at 13%, in the office and around 8pm from home, if you see, from 8:44pm to 9:41pm the batt was at 100% an then it goes down and reach 60% at 3am, so it was discharging, and then it tried to charge to reach 100% but couldnt. at 6:30am i woke up and bat was at 78%. so, how can i get it to keep the charge, i dont mind going form 90 to 100 but not going from 100 to 60 and to 100.

anybody can help?

I like the graph... is that an app you got on the phone? It might be interesting to compare what other peoples phones are doing. It certainly looks like your phone is constantly trying to charge back up fully but something is clearly draining it.

Have you looked at the dialler access to the battery usage... open your dialler and type in *#*#4636#*#* that will give you an idea of what is using the battery. I think if you turn off your phone tonight before you charge it, it should give you a baseline to check things on the Total Since Boot setting.

Now I am no tech person, but by rights if you do this just as you are going to bed the phone shouldn't be running anything much so it might indicate which of the systems is causing a problem. I will try and remember to do the same to my phone tonight and maybe we can compare answers tomorrow to see where the differences are.

Just downloaded it, so I will see what results I get over night. Its 17:44 over here so bed in 4 hours or so... results in the morning. I know my battery is normally on 100% in the morning (or pretty close) so if this app is also part of the problem, that should be pretty obvious to me.

Must also remember to turn phone off and back on... post it note on forehead - very attractive!

Anyone else want to join in our experiment, feel free. The more info the better.

OK here is my graph and to be fair it is exactly what I would expect to see...

On the Battery History select Time Since last boot and Partial Wake Usage is

Android System 59s
k-9 mail 11 s
Toiteur 6s

The Time without sleeping on Running is now 9m 28s but that is really since I have switched on this morning.

I think you have a program that is keeping your phone awake so have a look at the Partial Wake Usage and see what is listed as the highest and then just flick through the other settings to see what has been using your battery.

I am no technical whizz, but it might help you pinpoint where its going wrong be it a programme, your battery or even your charger.

Let me know what you discover.

Now it seems that it wont charge to 100%, only goes to around 90 and then down to 77 and thats when i woke up to shut up the dog, This time i let it in airplane mode, so no radio or internet when charging. in partial woke up time, i dont have anything, only android system, media, and k9 mail. we need more input from other members, so i can know if its my phone the problem. here its a little complicated to return the phone, my carrier telcel is a pita concerning returns or warranty, i dont want to send my phone for 2 months so it comes back the same.

attache the graph for yesterday to this morning.

It would seem that you do indeed have some kind of charging problem there.

Options... I guess you could buy a new battery to see if it is that.

You could try a different charger altho they do seem to be very particular about what charger your use. For example couldn't use my son's LG smartphone charger, even tho connections are the same and my SE charger does his phone.

You could try doing a factory reset to see if it is the phone software not working properly.

And the last one is go back to your tel co, but I understand your reluctance.

Suggestion.. Strip it down to the factory settings. Do NOT add anything to your phone except your graphing app. This will give you a true picture of what is going on and I think you will see quite a different usage track. Since you seem to be trouble shooting, this would be a logical next step, prior to buying anything. Always check under the rug and in those pesky dusty corners bbefore you venture out into a new purchase. Just my Nickel (Used to be 2 cents, gone up due to inflation, LOL)...

Android OS will let the battery charge to 100% and then it cuts the charge till it drops bellow a certain level then it starts to charge again.

But I have found at times my battery has hit over 60deg centigrade and there is a thermal cut of so if a certain temp is reached again the charging is stopped. Mostly if I leave the phone under my pillow or its been a very hot night. I just pull the battery for 5 minutes to cool and then refit and recharge and its fine.

I haven't used Excel for years so I don't have a clue how to use it. I have Excel 2007 on my laptop, how to I display the chart using the CSV file?

Thanks :)

Remove the centre column on excel so all you're left with is the date and time of sample and the battery level - personally i found sample times every 5 minutes so i deleted them down to every 15 - then sorted the data

after that, just highlight all the data - then on the "ribbon" at the top of excel, choose the "insert" tab, then inside the "charts" box just click on the LINE option and pick your poison from the selection

that should do it

Then i did a printscreen, cut down with photoshop and loaded to the cloud - but i'm sure there's a better way than that to post results but -meh- it worked lol

hope that helps

I use windows 7's Snipping tool to copy a selection, and use photobucket to upload :)

Anyway thanks for letting my know, I will post my graph tomorrow :)

It will be interesting to see how it goes Pendejerto over the next few days with the temperature coming down.

We are all in the UK enjoying normal Autumn temperatures, cold and wet out but pretty stable temperature indoors, probably in the low 20's.

Keep us informed.

Edit - Just wanted to say that I have K9 polling hourly for a pop3 and my gmail account, and bear in mind the other night you tried it in airplane mode so it wouldn't have polled at all during that charge session. Sounds more like the heat is to much for it.
