I rooted a friends phone and showed them how to flash Roms, and usually i can answer all their questions or find the answer here or xda but last night he flashed from ZenHero Lite to cm6 and now he cannot sync his contacts back from htc sync. He did not have his contacts synced through google. Is there a way to get them out of htc sync even though it does not recognize the phone anymore?

no they were not backed up in any way except through htc sync on his laptop. Apparently contacts can be saved as phone or google and his were saved as phone contacts and got erased in the wiping and flashing. There has to be away to export them from htc sync, i just cant find them

I don't know what zenhero is, (aosp or sense) but if it isn't a sense rom, that is why it won't sync. You could nandroid back to the old rom, sync them with the cloud (google) and then reflash the new rom and you will be set. Unless google isn't an option.

its sense based, so i think that is the root of the problem. i think you are right, i will have to nandroid back to get them, i was just hoping there was a simpler way.

thank you all for the responses

it really is a quick fix. nandroid only takes a few minutes. In the future, make sure all contacts are saved as google and not phone. the nice thing about having all the contacts in google, aside from easily being able to get them back, is if you use google voice on your computer, all your contacts are already there, so theres no looking them up in your phone, or your rolodex, if youre a OG haha

CM6 is an AOSP ROM so anything Sense related won't work. Like others have said, just nandroid back to the old ROM and place the contacts in Google using Google Voice. Then you can either reflash CM6 or if you nandroid it you just need to restore the CM6 ROM when you are ready.

With your contacts listed in Google Voice you never have to worry about losing them. Google syncs them to your contacts showing on your phone. Nice touch is that when you make any changes like additions or deletions in your Google Voice account while on your computer, your contacts on your computer are updated automatically.
