Forced 2.0.1 DROID UPDATE! HOWTO

Figure i'd post this in a new thread so it doesn't get overlooked in the droid root thread.

Download it here: https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESD56-from-ESD20.84263456.zip

How to install:

1. rename to update.zip
2. put in root of sd card
3. turn off phone
4. boot into recovery http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=210&t=503
DO NOT SELECT "WIPE DEVICE" OR YOUR DEVICE WILL BE WIPED (OBVIOUSLY :p)
5. install update.zip
6. ????
7. profit!

- you need to have file extensions showing when you rename the file, otherwise you effectively name the file update.zip.zip and that's what causes the error mentioned above. When extensions aren't on, it assumes that anything you type in for the file name should go before the extension. Both Windows and OSX have options for this in Explorer and Finder respectively.

Thanks Tabs for this info ^

Power-cycle the Droid before starting the application of the update in either case

No certainty any of this will help, just standard troubleshooting steps.

Admin edit. Leave in tact: The original poster's instructions are #9 on this thread, [he deleted]. They are possibly more complete (for a beginner). At the time of this edit, they said:
2.0.1 forced update:

THESE ARE USA VZ ACTIVATED PHONES

download: https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESD56-from-ESD20.84263456.zip

Rename to update.zip

Copy to you SD card as "update.zip". Check your windows options, it if appears as just "update" get into windows and fix this.

Power off y0ur DROID, top key, hold it down and then select the menu option to turn it off.

Wait a bit for it to actually power off.

Open the physicial keyboard.

Power back on with this: hold the the X key on the keypad and THEN, OR at the same TIME, next hold the power button (top right button).

When you see a "/!\" symbol, press and hold first vol+, and then hold down the camera button.
Keep holding it down for a bit... maybe 15-20 seconds IIRC...
Alternative, there's reports that you have to do it fast, or do it at the same time.
We simply, and calmly did the vol+, and the did the camera button... 2 seconds or less in the process?

Once the menu shows....
Use the dpad to select the SD UPDATE.ZIP

Wait until the progress bar goes all the way.

When it's done hit the Dpad button, up top it says to hit it to reboot now.

Enjoy the new lockscreen and 2.0.1 goodness after reboot!

Wait so are those steps AllDroid.org - View topic - [how to] How to get into recovery ones where you only go through a few of the steps and make a different selection to install from SD card?

Just trying to make sure I have this 100% clear before I do it.

yes, put the update.zip in the root of your sd card.
then turn off the phone
power on while holding "x" down
then press volume up and the camera button at the SAME time.

you should then see something like "apply update.zip from sd?" hit that..don't choose wipe device or your phone will be wiped lol

I just ran this, and I can CONFIRM that it works. While the site does say on Step 4. Select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" from Alldroid.org, that option is there, but OBVIOUSLY you don't pick that, you select SD CARD UPDATE.ZIP (which is option 2 i think, option 1 is just to reboot). Took me about 3 minutes. It's been 5 minutes, and boy right away I can tell, no chopiness in switching screens, and no lag in bringing down notification bar.

I followed these exact instructions from another thread (I edited the grammar :p):

----------

Rename signed-voles-ESD56-from-ESD20.84263456.zip to update.zip

Copy it to the root of your SD card

Power off your DROID and power back on while holding the X key on the keypad.
When you see a "/!\" symbol, press both vol+ and camera.

Use the dpad to select the SD UPDATE.ZIP (2 option i think)

Wait until the progress bar goes all the way.

When it's done hit the Dpad button up top it says to hit it to reboot now (1st option I think).
