From Pittsburgh with Love

Despite being a non-3G market in Pittsburgh (and no G1 available in retail stores yet), I picked up a G1 around Thankgiving while visiting my folks in NYC.

I've been a TMo customer for 5+ years and had a Blackberry Pearl previously. G1 was a logical smartphone step-up without shelling out an arm and a leg for the iPhone. I actually do enjoy TMo's service.

So far I'm happy with the G1 functions and looking forward to the day 3G comes to town.

Welcome! At the rate that T-Mo is flipping the 3G switch you should have it very soon.

The store rep claimed 'early 2009,' which could mean anywhere from January to June I think.

But honestly EDGE service is reasonable and fast enough for most of my everyday functions. Never had anything better than EDGE with my old Blackberry anyway. On top of that, I'm in wifi range 75% of the day (Blackberry didn't have wifi).

That said, I tried out 3G while in NYC/NJ and it was indeed noticeably faster than EDGE.
