Root I'm highly considering rooting my phone tonight...

I've never used the app to root so I can't vouch for it (I'm sure somebody here has used it and droidlife is highly credible). But, yessir, after that just make sure you have a backup made in recovery or through the app ROM Manager and you are good to go to flash roms, kernels, themes, etc.

Understandable. I first rooted using a one-click root but lost root after updating to FRG22D. So I rooted using the method I linked to above. Once I got all the files/software I needed it only took about 15 minutes. So it's really not that bad.

If you're too scared, you could also try this:
http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...olution-droid-thread-d-d-latest-v2-0-4-a.html

From quickly reading through that thread it seems like some people try this method and it doesn't work for them, while it works fine for others. It's probably your easiest choice though.

I'm looking through the thread with that 1 click option I'm just really REALLY scared I'm going to brick my phone or it will have problems in the future and I'll be without a phone :\ :(

Honestly that's why I recommend the method I linked to orginally. Though there are no known reports of people getting "bricked" Droids aside from dropping their phones in a pool or something like that.

But if you do screw something up, or need to unroot to take your phone to VZW, the way to restore your phone to stock is identical to the rooting method I originally linked to. You can do virtually anything to your Droid outside of physically damaging it and fix it by flashing an SBF file through RSD Lite.

That said, I think that one-click root option is very unlikely to screw up your phone.

you won't brick your phone, but I understand your fear. try the "1 click" root method linked to here as it is about as easy as it gets.

and you have a ton of support here to help with whatever issue you come across. your not likely to have something happen 100 others have not - including me at first - that others cannot or did not solve already.

like Nike says.. just do it

A few things. If you start flashing kernels, make sure you have a few other kernels on your SD card so that if the one you just installed sends you into a "boot loop", you can quickly and easily boot into recovery and install another one.

One of the first root apps I recommend is ROM Manager. One might consider this app "ROMming with training wheels". It pretty much does everything for you, you can download and install ROMs from within the app. It isn't always that up to date with which ROMs are available though.

If you want to overclock, you'll need SetCPU for most ROMs.

After rooting and whenever you get a set-up you like with a new ROM, create a nandroid backup. You can do this through ROM Manager. It's nice to have a few backups available to switch between recently flashed ROMs if you get sick of one.

Also before flashing ROMs which usually requires wiping all your data, I recommend backing up some of your data with MyBackup so you can quickly restore your data after flashing. I also recommend syncing your apps to the web with App Brain in case your apps don't restore properly.

Just do it man. You won't regret it. Lots of people here to help if you get stuck.

My wife was stubborn for months and wouldn't let me root her phone. She left her phone home one Saturday afternoon and I rooted, rom'd and overclocked it and she got home and was just like "son of a.." because she realized she should've let me do it months ago.

i hate to be the lone wolf here but i personally think he should do some more research first. it sounds like he has a lot to learn about root in general. especially what to do post root.
i would read the all things root sticky before i went any farther. it is easy to root your phone and i know that there are those here that will help get you through the process successfully. but learning these things for yourself will give you a greater appreciation for what your new phone can do!

I agree. I highly, HIGHLY suggest reading through this sticky: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...e-updated-september-18th-2010-9-38pm-cst.html to learn as much as you can about what you are actually doing and why you are doing it.

I also suggest reading this thread: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html as it will give you more than enough info about everything related to rooting your Droid.

Being prepared to root is one thing, but being prepared to take corrective action if something goes wrong is almost more important than being prepared to root.

Good luck.

I would have to agree. When I first started reading about rooting, I was intimidated. After reading the Guide about Rooting I felt a little better. But when I first rooted I used Soup Or Root 1.8a and it worked great. Then I did something o my phone and lost SU so I had to reRoot. I used the ADB method that OMJ has listed on the guide and it took 2 tries. Mainly because I mistyped one of the commands. But when I was finished that will be the only way I will root ever again, It was quite simple and I thought it was fun learning the commands in the cmd prompt.
