Root What I Have Done With a Droid Now That It's Rooted

I think it would be useful to compile all the things we could do now with the rooted Droid, with procedures, in one place, so other people can decide whether it's worth the hassle.

I finally got rid of Amazon MP3, Visual Voicemail, Corporate Calender and Email applications, by downloading Terminal Emulator from the App Store and typing the following into my droid into the terminal emulator:

su

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

cd /system/app

mv Email.apk Email.bak

mv VVMStub.apk VVMStub.bak

mv com.amazon.mp3.apk com.amazon.mp3.bak

mv CorpCal.apk CorpCal.bak

mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

sync

reboot

As you can see, I only renamed the file extension, so if I ever need those apps, or something goes wrong, I can always just rename them back.

What else have you guys done (please post with procedures/download links/etc)

Wait... what?

When was the droid rooted? Who did it?

I have been away from my computer for like 30 minutes. What did I miss?

If you are serious... then I really think you should make some sort of announcement in the droid rooting thread that already exists. Be sure to include sources for the information and what not.

There will be tons of very excited people if this is real. Myself included.

Ok, and now to answer your first question. What have I done? Cried tears of joy. :D

I don't understand the adb console or whatever, though. I don't know a ton about Linux. (Enough to know about su, though), so I will be spending the next 3-4 hours reading as much as humanly possible before taking the plunge.

Big E-hugs and kisses to you. :D

i'm sure the process is being made easier as we speak... i'll wait a few days.... i'll wait for the update ota too.. besides it's late and i'm tired.

A question.. and my first reason for wanting to root..

Is there a way, once it's rooted, to make the droid NOT open all the "useless" apps when it first starts(and prevent them from contsantly re-opening)?

This is one of my main beefs with the Droid..

I will keep watching this thread to see what can be done..hopefully people follow up with the how-to's as this is my first Android phone, and I am a complete newb to rooting:eek:. I may be a guru at PC's, but not Android phones-yet:cool:

Well, this process made my droid stop opening the Corporate Calender every time I booted. So I guess this process works for any app. Just make sure it's not something vital, or you may have to wipe your phone and start from scratch. I always backup before experimenting, it's a good habit to get into.

I've been trying for about an hour to figure out how to use adb and push files and what not... and I am getting nowhere. There is not one solid writeup anywhere for people who are not familiar with linux. They assume you already know how to do certain things... and I don't.

Lol. welcome to linux. thats always how it is. You have to search search and search some more to piece anything together. Its pretty rare to find a 100% comprehensive write up on anything. I dont like it either but in my experience thats how it is....just be glad youre not hacking dtv tivos....now THAT is a challenge.

lol.

The OP started a new thread with a pretty well written How-To on getting root.

My only problem now that I have root is that I can't get the default apps like facebook and amazon MP3 to uninstall. :(

Nice! I need to add the root patch. I just updated it manually.

The best part of su:
