Skype Calls Over 3G Hacked Already - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

Skype is the undisputed best free (for the most part) Voip software available, but when they released their latest Android application they removed 3G calling for everyone in the USA. Well that feature has been hacked and re-enabled by one of our members by the name of xeudoxus, who I have been talking to and he says this was quite simple and took him a matter of 15 minutes to do it.

To install this, simply download the apk that's in the thread, copy and paste it in your memory card and install it using a fill manager application. When it is done installing go to the application and call us to tell us how awesome it runs.

I am sure everyone is happy to see this feature added to their service, and I for one am going to post this then download it and call forum administrator Dan

I thought it didn't work for any of the Galaxy S line yet, or at least that's what the Market page says.

the included Skype Mobile app which comes pre-installed on our phones already did that from the beginning, everyone else JUST got their party invitation, Verizon users already emty'd a keg before you guys got here.....this is not news to anyone with a Verizon smartphone

what will be news is when they figure out how to get it to allow for truly free calls over WiFi. as it is now Skype on a Verizon phone will not allow it, it forces it to the normal wireless and eats at your regular minutes so there's really no advantage to using Skype on a Verizon phone until then

As far as I know that is not accurate.
Verizon Skype app does not use 3G, it just uses the actual voice from cellular network. In other words, it is not VOIP, just cell voice not using the data. That is why you couldn't call anyone using WiFi. New app is VOIP app using your 3G or Wifi.

you are talking about a different app. from what i gather the Verizon one, that comes preloaded on Verizon phones was a different app from the beginning....it would not allow WiFi calling, only if you had a cellular connection (call it 3G if you like, point being no free WiFi calling was available)

the app just hacked is a different version of the app, not the same as the preloaded VZW one. this hacked app doesnt do anything different for Verizon users, they could always use it as long as they had some sort of signal other than WiFi, 3G or not......but it always used cell minutes

I guess there was a bit of miscommunication. I realize these are two different apps. I thought that VZW Skype app used minutes and not data therefore not a VOIP app while one shown in Droid-Life uses 3g and not minutes meaning it is using VOIP.

yes....execpt, my understanding is, if you try to use any Skype program on a Verizon phone Verizon will automatically dock your minutes

3G might be technically data, but it's still going cellular through their towers and therefore they can route it any way they like

WiFi does NOT go through any of Verizon's portals, therefore that is the only way to get free Skype calling on a Verizon phone, the way i understand it

and so far, this cannot be done, but i haven't tried yet either with this new app, i know with the current VZW app if you are connected to WiFi Skype refuses to call out unless you turn off WiFi. they don't care about 3G or not because it's all them...

I still cant log in either... I have Samsung Epic... with sprint... as soon as i hit enter to enter my password, i get a message saying my password is incorrect, when i click on "forgot password" i get a message saying im using an unsupported browser... should i download a different browser??...opera??

It's a blocked Samsung thing. I'm sure someone will figure out a workaround soon...
