Root Beginner ROM for Rooted EVO?

Hey everyone, quick question for you...

My EVO is rooted and I am interested in trying a ROM... Im not sure exactly what they do, though.

So I am looking for a beginner's ROM, and some advice.

Also, I would like to put a passcode lock on my screen without that darned emergency button coming up... is there a ROM that has taken out the emergency button? Or can I uninstall it myself?


Before I do a ROM....

I am not sure how I should have backed things up, so here is what I did:

I brought up titanium backup: pressed menu-more-create "update.zip"<----- what is this for?) Selected user application- selected TitaniumBackup-3.5.2.zip-pressed create "update.zip"- pressed menu- pressed batch-backup all user apps + system data-select all-run the batch operation

okay next I brought up ROM Manager-backup current rom-ok

Then I went to my people app: Menu-import/export-export to sd card-google-ok-menu-import/export-export to sd card-phone-ok

Then I brought up the footprints app: pressed menu- export -ok -email -gmail -haru -send -ok

Then Star Note Pro: Menu-settings-backup & restore-backup & restore-create backup

then i connected my EVO to my Mac via usb:

brought up the mounted card:

copied and pasted the following folders into my EVO backup folder on my Mac:

clockworkmod: both backup and download folder

titanium backup: the folder and contents along with TitaniumBackup-3.5.2.zip

The Data Folder

The contents of the Download folder that I want to keep

The contents of DCIM (pics and vids):

The backup from star note pro

The backups of footprints

the two .vcf's I made of my contacts

and basically anything else I cared about.

okay, so did I back everything up right?

and now is it safe to do a ROM? and whats is the best beginner one, and is there one without the emergency call button on it

Sheesh..you are more thorough than most of us. If you are nand unlock do a nand backup while you're at it so you can restore everything back and you wont have to do any restoring with titanium or any of the things you just mentioned. Nand restore does EVERYthing.

For close to stock rooted ROM you can try Lovers Rom. You can also find a deodexed version of the latest OTA which is completely stock but rooted. If you dont care for the extra sprint stuff and still want sense, I use Baked Snack rom. Try 1.7 first. It's pretty good and has good battery life.

The passcode lock I'm not sure about though. Maybe someone can chime in on that. However I know on baked rom the emergency button is there. I dont recall on the other ones I mentioned if they do.

I actually did a Nand backup, but I couldnt find the file on my SD card, and thought maybe it was in a hidden folder, and I didnt feel like going through the hidden folders, lol... What is Sense if I may ask? I like my phone rooted, and I got rid of alot of that Sprint Crap... I like things nice and tidy, lol

Just Nand back your phone, to save everything as a "ROOTED Stock ROM". This will allow you to try different types of rom and always go back to your Stock if you don't like it.

I really like Fresh 3.3.0.1 ROM, so far it has all junk deleted and alot of good updates/goodies. Take a look at it in my sig.

I installed this also and it's been running just fine with no problems.
I haven't updated my Kernal yet, but it's seems good with the one that came with it.

I have flashed so many roms I have lost count! The best where everything works and looks like stock are baked snack and fresh. He BEST rom I have used to date (including currently!) Is myn's warm twopointtwo. It is gorgeous, fast, everything works great. By far the best Sense rom out right now. I didn't care for the smcustom fonts so I am using the stock fonts, just flash on top of te rom and you are good to go. Check it out here: [ROM] Myn

Harukasan, I posted above to check out myn's warm twopointtwo, and can't reccomend it enough. I was checking out xda this morning and it looks like release 2 is imminent! I can't reccomend this rom enough. Wireless tether works right out of the box too! Myn posted that he may make release 2 available today, so I will report back here once it is in the wild. Again, it is a Sense based rom (what your rooted stock is) that blows all other Sense roms out of the water!

I'm planning on rooting my EVO (mostly to get rid of bloatware and get free tethering), but am a bit confused about the ROMs. As far as I understand it, they are UI/operating systems that use the phone's basic radio drivers and CPU to do stuff, each is unique and has some features (or not) as compared to the "stock" rom. Did I get that right, or am I off base?

Also, I know I can google on where to get ROMs for the EVO, but is there anywhere that has a somewhat comprehensive list with comparisons? There are so many names, and I have no idea what any of them do or don't do.

And a final question: I see that most rooting process require a wipe of the phone. Does switching between ROMs require this as well? Will a backup restore all old data and apps to a new ROM?

You have the right idea. Rom is what the user interacts with. Kernel interfaces the hardware to the software. Firmware is he set of instructions for a chip set to operate by. Put them all together and you have the "user experiance" or some such nonsense. Think windows or Ubuntu as the rom, the kernel as the os interface of software to hardware, and drivers as "radios" ie firmware.
As far as where to get roms check out xda forum. Lots of good info there. I have been using myn's warm twopointtwo and it is absolutely awesome. There is a wiki with a bit of a reference between roms but the best bet is to read the forums. Always check the last couple of pages as the posts are cumulative.
As far as rooting. Use the latest unrevoked and you wont lose anything. You will end up with a rooted version of what you have with no additional changes. If you flash a new rom you will lose your data as you will need to wipe your phone first to make sure there are no conflicts or problems. After you root you can use titanium back up to back up your apps so that after you install a custom rom then you can reinstall titanium and then restore the apps.
Short story is if you are interested in rooting then you will see the benefits. A lot of the custom roms run significantly better than stock, you can use custom kernels to further tweek the "user experiance" and have a phone that actually takes advantage of your phones capability.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many ROMs...

I rooted last night, was a piece of cake. And I DL and used ROM Manager and Titanium to make backups. I'm a little lost on what they actually back up. It sounds like they both backup everything.

Are there compatibility issues between ROMs and kernels, or is it a kind of free for all?

Based on this thread the first ROM I have tried is myn's warm 2p2. Although I have nothing to compare it to......it ROCKS. I flashed a cool theme, a new kernel, and it's like I have a new phone! I loved it to begin with, I SUPER love it now. I put in a fresh battery (i have a spare so I used the one that charged in the charging dock - using that there doesn't seem to be the initial 10% drop) anyway...I've been using my phone non stop for about 3 hours and I'm still at 84%.

Another recommendation for Myn's Warm 2.2 - only ROM I've stuck with - been running the beta RLS2 since this past weekend and overall this is just a great performer. Final RLS2 should be out by next weekend I would expect but go ahead and flash RLS1 and enjoy - you can update to RLS2 without data wipe once it's out - it gives the EVO a great look and feel.

Thanks for the info everyone. I flashed Myn's Warm rls2 and everything worked fine. Here's a few questions I haven't been able to find answers to.

1. After flashing a ROM and tweaking my settings and apps, I can make a back up image of that state, flash another ROM, and then come back to the 1st EXACTLY as I left it (at the backup of course)?

2. Using titanium backup to backup apps - is there a way to restore ALL of them in one go instead of reloading them 1 by 1 and having it ask for permission each time?
