UK
Just had a wierd phone call with 3 customer support (Via India). Apparently Three UK are not releasing Froyo update in UK. Now, I can't quite believe this and I am still waiting for confirmation from Keri King, the executive Office Adminstrator, at 3 UK head office.. I have a case reference number, all I can do is wait... I was told they would contact me within 5 working days. Lets see...

I'm quite surprised to hear this. Is your phone branded or unbranded? Unbranded you can easily manually download the update to Froyo.

I then got the minor update to 2.10.405.8 OTA.

I seem to remember when Froyo first appeared it showed up on my phone but I was not near Wifi. When I got home, it was gone :(
After a week of waiting I finally downloaded and installed the manual update.

That's the beauty of Android. ;)

Cheers

I agree with marshduck. Waiting for 3UK (who I am also with) to pull their finger out is a painful process. If it turns out they aren't going to release Froyo, which really is baffling if true, then they'll just end up with a lot of customers rooting and installing custom roms.

It's so easy to do (if you're careful), I wish I'd done it as soon as I got my Desire.

Go on swgastro, you know you want to :p

My HTC Desire is branded/locked to three. Still waiting for froyo as we all know. It has the SLCD screen and I managed to kill it 1 day after receiving it trying to update it. I denied all knowledge of messing with it and a replacement was sent the next day.. I wont be doing that again =/

I emailed Kevin Russell (CEO of Three) asking when they would release the update (got a reply from Keri King. Executive Office Administrator, saying they will contact me within the next 5 working days) as well a contacting Three customer services. Some guy from India called today to say they weren't releasing froyo, and I'm still waiting for Keri King or whoever to get back to me..

Things arnt looking up =(

i take it you got your desire direct from 3, as my sister got her desire last month on 3 and the 1st thing i did was do a system update( i have a 4 month old desire on skodafone so i konow what im doing ), had 2.1 update 1 at the start and 98mb later was 2.2. I also installed aps 2 sd and it works fine....maybe she was one of the few lucky ones who got an unbranded phone?

the same happened with vodafone.. my wife got hers 2 weeks before me in may and hers is unbranded and unlocked . i got mine in early june and was locked to vodafone

My Desire was also branded/locked to three and has the SLCD screen. It's now unbranded, rooted and happily running Froyo. :)

If I'd done a bit more reading, I wouldn't have had a full day trying to fix a problem where I thought I'd bricked it. It turned out to be a stupid mistake on my part. It is very easy to mod the Desire once you get your head around it and Froyo is definitely worth upgrading to. It's just a shame you had a bad experience with it. I guess it would have put me off too.

Still, it will be very interesting to hear what Keri King has to say about it. It's a stupid decision if they choose not to let customers have Froyo though. It makes no sense to cheat customers out of official OS updates. Small wonder there's a thriving modding community!

All the best,
Jim

My experience of 3 customer service is that they no nothing about anything. They make up rubbish and I have never found any info they have given even accurate or informative.

Just don't waste your time speaking with them. Be patient and I'm sure it will be here. If not its supposedly easy to one click root these days.

3 UK's failure to update comes as no surprise whatsoever. It took months and months to get an update on Symbian 3 v 5 for my Nokia N97 that I had under contract with them. I got so frustrated with 3 that I bought an unlocked HTC Desire. I use that with the 3 SIM card but don't rely on 3 for any software updates or support for that phone. I'll be switching to another carrier when the contract expires.

Just install the 2.2 RUU, very simple to do, I have no experience doing it and had 2.2 running within 30 minutes of getting my new phone.
Just make a goldcard
install htc sync
connect the phone to your computer.
run the RUU and its done and dusted.

I means I have now got rid of the 3 crap, and all future updates will come direct from HTC
