The DX bootloader situation sucks... Hope this brightens up someones day...

P.S. This method may work on other VZ Android phones with a 3G Mobile Hotspot Feature...

This was tested on a Motorola Droid X Froyo 2.2(OTA) Rooted

Requirements:
Root(just kidding)
Stock 3G Mobile Hotspot Application
EasySwitch(Trial) by SmartDyne(Download from Market)

1. Download and Setup EasySwitch Widget
2. Fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot and wait for it to fully connect up(30 seconds?)
- If this is your first time running through this, open up your browser and go somewhere. You should get the Verizon Self Provisioning page... If not, you're wasting your money.
3. Now use EasySwitch to cycle the Radio *Off* then back *On* (Top row, 4th from the left... you must do this every time after you fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot)

Voila...

The difference is you get to utilize Infrastructor mode. no ad hoc

Not true. I don't know the limit but you can differently connect more than one device. I've done 3

Infrastructure mode means the phone appears as a standard Wifi network in your list of networks when you open your PC. It means it is acting just like your wireless router acts at home.

No creating ad-hoc networks on your PC. You just start the app, and boom, a new wireless network appears on all wireless-capable devices within range.

Wireless Tether and Barnacle do this also. Any time I've used them I just start the app, then click on my connections on the computer and they show right up, click connect and it's done.

Which means what exactly? I guess I'm missing something, binary visions said that you don't have to create an ad hoc network, which I don't have to do with the other 2 apps, but where does them being ad hoc play into it?

It's not the same thing. You're setting up a computer-to-computer Wifi network (ad-hoc). This restricts security, some devices are not capable of connecting to it (notably Android devices), and it is generally a less reliable way of connecting. Some software plays nice, some doesn't. Performance is generally worse because the devices are competing for the airspace without a controlling entity, signal strength is innacurate... There are lots of problems with ad-hoc mode.

Ah, so if I'm not going to connect another android device to my X I really wouldn't benefit from using the 3G Mobile Hotspot. Thanks for clearing this up for me.

I use my Hotspot connection to connect to xBox Live and play on line.. It is crazy but my Hotspot connection is faster than my satellite internet connection.

I question if I can still do that if I download that app and switch form the connection I have to infrastructure type connection..

I've been wondering if the tether/3g hotspot would be fast enough for me to play my PS3 online, I'm gonna try it out. If it works I can save $60 a month.

Should be possible... I've been able to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare on Wii, with decent results.... Here's the thing, I'm in california... and I've notice while running speedtest.net, that sometime my data connection gets pipe through Kansas. If that happens, my pings go up to 300ms+, and it just won't work for the Wii. However, if I am connected through a california connection, my ping will drop to under 130ms, even down to 100ms flat, and my ping meter in CoD will be "Green with 3 of 5 bars", and be very playable. You'll just need to try it out. Let us know how it goes.

i tried installing on my sprint epic and it doesn't seem to work.
i can connect to the "sprint" wifi hotspot but my wireless connection shows no internet connectivity - i tried to go to google ON MY LAPTOP, no dice. So i thought I'd try it and see if you needed to hit a site on the phone - no dice, since i turned off the radio it's not working.

are there other steps - for the android stupid?

So you want your ping to be lower? I always figured the higher the better, why is a lower ping better?

I just did a speed test... 233 ping, 1564 download, 332 upload.

Those numbers crush what I was able to get with Bridgemaxx (the only highspeed internet service available out in the country) that ran me $45 bucks a month. As soon as I got my DX I cancelled my subscription to Bridgemaxx and just used PdaNET until upgrading to 2.2 and rooting my phone to get Wireless Tether for Root Users. With Bridgemaxx my download speeds were always under 1000 kbps, and upload was under 100.

Color me happy!

Ummm... yeah this doesn't make any sense to me at all. I fire up the hotspot, then I toggle the cell service to off... so it shows that my computer has an excellent connection to my phone, but there's no internet service since my antenna is set to OFF... ohhhh, I just got it. Cycle off, then back on again. Ok.

So what exactly does this do? How does it fool Verizon?

Sorry for the confusion... Turn your radio back on.. You need to cycle it *Off* then back *On*

The thing with using the DX Hotspot and gaming is that you can still be jacked by the server the the game goes through. I use mine via xBox wireless to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, GH, Band of brothers and a few more. I'm more worried of over using my 2G of space and getting a serious over charge.. I have been in the middle of playing and everyone got booted from a server.. but we all hooked right back up...

Hard to believe that my phone is faster than my satellite internet connection..
Not to sound super stupid here as I'm a babe to the whole DX phone and still learning.. But what radio are you talking about that needs to be turned off then back on?

It's the cell phone radio that you're turning off and on again. The basic CDMA radio that it uses for all communications.

In case you didn't know, "radio" is a generic term used for all wireless transmitters/receivers. There is a Wifi "radio" in your phone as well.
