Root OK, done playing Mr. Nice Guy, should I root?

OK I've had the Evo for a week now and even though this phone blows me away with its speed and processing of virtually every application I run, I'm still kind of obsessing over better battery life. My question is can I just root (getting rid of a lot of bloatware) and see an improvment in battery life?

Or have some of you only seen an imrpovment in battery life by putting certain ROMs on?

Edit: If I have to install a ROM, I'm looking for one where I can at least leave on my mobile network and have stuff like facebook, weather, twitter sync every 4 hours or so and get AT LEAST 14 hrs w/o needing a charge.

Yes you should... I'm currently getting over 2 days of battery life (with minimal use).

I don't mean to put yet another battery topic on this forum but, Sometimes I'm not sure if my battery is fine or if its really draining quickly. For the week that I've had I have no doubt been using it more on the heavier side (syncing 4 accounts with 4-8 hr intervals), 20-30 texts a day, browsing, streaming pandora in the morning, facebook/twitter, games, games that require internet access.... so you get the idea

Today, unplugged around 8:15 am, with moderate usage (using my phone as an mp3 in my car for 20-30 mins, browsing on & off, facebook, updating apps in the market, and playing games for near 45 mins, my battery is at 42% @ 2:12pm EST. So within 6 hrs of more or less heavy usage and toggling mobile network off and on throughout the day and letting wifi run for the last 2 hrs, thats about 60% gone within 6 hrs.

Does that seem about right? Can anyone with comparable usage have more battery power left after this amount of time?

Yes, you should definitely root -- at least so you can wirelessly tether for free. However, we're not going to be able to tell you if one ROM will satisfy your specified criteria. Your mileage may vary so it's best if you tried a number of ROMs and see how they work for you.

You can get root the easy way (Unrevoked.com which is what I did and it takes about 5 minutes) or the "proper" way which takes longer and has more manual steps. It's really up to you.

Then get ROM Manager from the Market and start experimenting with different ROMs. You can download some directly from ROM Manager (some won't download for some reason) while others you'll need to download from their respective web sites onto your SD card and use ROM Manager to install them.

Most ROMs include Sense -- the UI overlay on top of Android while a few do not and provide a more basic platform (thus improved battery and speed performance). Most people believe Sense inhibits performance.

I'm using Backed Snack 1.8 for now because it allows you to overclock your CPU up to 1267GHz -- the fastest I've seen so far that's stable.

The most important thing to do is read, read, read about everything you can so you know what you're doing and now to fix things.

Well I was rooted and ran a lot of ROMs on my old Sprint Hero. So I'm at least familiar with the whole idea. I just want to make sure my Hero runs as it does right now with the extra juice. But I guess your right and I won't really know until I play with a few ROMs.

Rooted and running like my signature says and am very happy with my Evo
great battery life, runs very smooth and everything works!
got new hdmi cable last night and it works too!
customize the way you like, not the way sprint wants it to be.

URevoked is probably the best bet when it comes to safe and full root. I have never rooted prior to rooting my Evo a few days ago. If you decide to root with unrevoked, click on the link in my signature and use the how to to root in under 10 minutes. Excluding setting up for root of course. Lol

Every root has the same end result. All it is that each root method was creates from an exploit found to achieveroot.

The experts recommend doing it the "proper" way so they would know what might cause a potential problem you're having. Since the Unrevoked process is proprietary (not open), they don't know exactly what it does so they don't recommend it. But that's what I used and I haven't had any major problems.

I can also vouch for unrevoked 3.21. I have not encountered any root method related problems since I used it. One advantage I find over the manual way is that it removes the possibility of any errors on your part. I can't tell you how many posts I've seen in rooting threads that start out with something like:

HELP!! I'M STUCK!! BOOTLOOP HELL!!

and then end up with:

Oh duh! I fixed it. I forgot step #112 where I was supposed to adb push a turd and then wipe my dalvik. After 3 hours of troubleshooting it's working great!

I just want it to work. I don't really need to know all the intricacies of each step along the way. One click and 5 mins of my time is just about right for me.

LOL - I rooted the Evo with Unrevoked since it seems fool proof and easy.

I rooted my Epic manually since I read the one-click root for Epic had some issues. The Epic manual rooting was very easy. Now all my Android phones are rooted. Very happy.

Try this rom. I use it and it works great and there are a couple different styles you can choose from.

Hi....friend your screen look cool man.... I like it. I am also root and runing fresh 3.3.0.1. I like your battery and the 3g indicator. I would like to know which app you are runing to get these.

The battery indicator looks like it's baked into the ROM. I've found one that is pretty close called Battery Status that works great, stays in the notification bar.

You can usually flash different notification icons (e.g. smooth sense) over a ROM to theme it.

Your battery life seems about right to me. I get about 6 hours of heavy use out of it a day. I play podcasts, sync about once an hour and text regularly. With CM6 my battery life hasn't improved, but I like it better!

Well I rooted and flashed freshs 3.3 ROM, its working pretty smooth so far. Battery life is great, no problems there. No lag really, its typically like stock to me which is good and what I'm use to flashing ROMs of his back in my Sprint Hero days. Plus I missed wireless tether
