So Cal
This is the OTA JI6 not leaked, etc. It's super easy, don't be intimidated but DO read and follow the step by step instructions. rhcp0112345 over at XDA has posted the OTA update JI6. Remember rhcp0112345 spent time and money to bring this update to us so it would be a nice gesture to donate $1 to his paypal if you avail yourself of his work. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=2GNX7EGPEPXYW

Download the OTA JI6 file, read about that here: Offical JI6 update - INFO thread - xda-developers

Get Odin here: Odin3_v1.0.rar

Here's a video tutorial on using Odin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnY7P14JSWQ

More Odin info if needed: Samsung Galaxy S: How to Upgrade Firmware using Odin Flash Tool Questions, Hacks, Problems, and Troubleshootings

Just remember to be patient while the phone updates and voila, you will be updated to the OTA JI6 without a wait.

No need to be intimidated, this works on stock, non-rooted phones. It takes no more than 10 minutes or so and you will have the update. But it is still possible to screw your phone up if you don't read and follow the step by step info so use this at your own risk.

I got a question.

What would happen if we flash this update and then the OTA wants to do the update?

I heard that the EVO got an OTA update. Then later got that same OTA update and could not overwrite itself and bricked the phone resulting in the pulling of the OTA from being pushed further.

All good so far. I'm not sure why it would prompt you to do an OTA update if you already have the identical version on your phone.

sorry but manual update DOES NOT WORK.

odin got stuck at file analysis every time...so i then restarted my computer and pulled the vibrant battery. tried again, stuck at cache.rfs

manual update WILL-NOT-WORK. do not try it.

edit:

Phone is bricked. power button does not turn on the phone. no way of turning it on or flashing back to stock or anything.

Thats what i get for trying.

Edit again:

pulled the battery and left it like that for awhile. tried turning it on again and im brought to a screen that has a picture of a cellphone two dots an exlamation point two more dots and a computer image.

what the hell?

Does it work for rooted phones as well?

besides on the Samsung Galaxy S: How to Upgrade Firmware using Odin Flash Tool Questions, Hacks, Problems, and Troubleshootings

it reads

"This tutorial is to help Samsung Galaxy S (I9000) users to upgrade the firmware of the phone. The requirement of this guide is the Samsung Galaxy S must be unlocked."

so maybe you DO have to be rooted to do it this way.

I believe that just implies that the phone must be capable of entering download mode manually, but I am not certain (as my phone is/was rooted when I applied the update via ODIN).

can anyone help with this unbrick?

This is very bizarre. There are many users reporting success (and none reporting this problem) over at xda using this method. Was your phone rooted? Did you follow the steps exactly, get into download mode, did you wait until the phone fully rebooted itself, etc?

If the instructions are followed to the letter and you wait for the phone to reboot fully, this should not happen.

oh

my

god.

fixed it.

if you get this phone exlamationpoint computer screen, a ''soft brick'' try this method

1. Take out battery, put it back in. (to turn the phone fully off)
2. Don't turn it the phone on!
3. Plug the phone into your PC, do not hit the power button!
4. See if the phone shows anything on the screen (powers on its own when plugged in)

IF the phone screen does 'turn on' after being plugged in without you hitting the power button, so far so good.

5. Now while it's on like this, hold the volume up and volume down buttons.
6. Hold the power button as well as the volume buttons until the screen goes black.
7. As soon as the screen goes black, let go of the power button! But DON'T let go of the volume buttons!

you should then be back in to download mode. ODIN AND ENJOY!

That's what I'm talking about! Way to go!

Glad you got it worked out, the problems you described should not happen. Did you unplug it or shut it off before it rebooted? This was such a quick and easy update.

So maybe an edit is in order about the manual update working?

anyone know if this will affect future OTA updates? and if I manually update to JI6 will another OTA JI6 be pushed to me again?

Highly unlikely. If you update using Odin and then try to use Kies to load JI6 Kies will inform you that you already have the latest, correct firmware. Besides, if the OTA did notify on your phone you could simply decline.

true but i'm having that issue where some apps aren't showing up in the market and i kinda want to have to the option of updating to the real deal OTA just in case.

Member "Tornado" above posted that using the Kies update to JI6 he can now see the apps he was unable to see before. I can confirm that this is correct. So if you have "missing apps" in the market then Kies would be the way to go - or wait for the notification OTA.
