I've had my Droid X since launch and been lurking here for awhile, I haven't had any real issues until now though...

Yesterday, my droid x started randomly opening the camera application without anyone or anything even touching the phone. It's maddeningly frustrating. It wakes the phone up when the screen is off, which kills the battery faster, it randomly pops up when I'm web browsing or writing a text. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, was there a fix other than taking the phone back to verizon? I haven't gotten the phone wet or dropped it or anything.

Have you tried a reboot?

I've done the soft reset/reboot by powering on and off multiple times, pulling the battery, even setting airplane mode on and off. Nothing like that works.

I was trying to avoid the complete wipe/reset if at all possible. It's not looking good for that though. Just trying to update my facebook status launched the camera 3 times.

I have had similar problems with my Droid x. The camera comes on at will and takes pictures also at will. The problem originally started when the phone lost its ability to use 3G. This was coupled with an inability of the phone to charge. After multiple phone wipes, I wiped out the mini sd card, pulled the battery, and the 3G and charging were restored. It was only after this that the camera problems surfaced, extremely irratating. The phone is, of course, out of warrenty, and I get the DEER in the Headlights look from any Verizon tech I ask for solutions, they just want to sell phones. Any solutions out there?

If it's software related:
Might have to try a SBF. Look in the root section to see how to do it.

If it's hardware related:
You might try a remapping app like Quick Launch to remap the camera button to some less battery intensive app. I have never used it and didn't see any free versions of the same type app in the market. They may be there, I just did a quick search.
