Root probably going to root tonight and have a couple questions...

hi there, rooting deletes nothing at all from your phone, it just gives you access to more of the phone normally reserved for people like developers etc.

though if you want to back up your apps anyway, get Astro File Manager (its free!) from the market, you can use that to make a backup of all your apps.

In the event of you losing all of your apps you can redownload Astro and you will be able to reinstall all of your apps.

But yeah as i said originally it doesnt wipe your phone or delete anything.

what all should i backup before rooting? will it delete my apps?

should I remove my SD card?

Here is something that really helped me when I rooted --> Howto: Root the HTC Droid Incredible - Technology - Jonamerica.com I know most of it is old news, but it is still good information.

I don't know why you would need to remove your SD card, no real concern there to my knowledge. Do a Nandroid backup. Power off your phone, then hold down the down volume button and the power button at the same time. You will be in bootloader, After it does it's thing, looking for a PB13.zip file, you need to use the volume button to go down to recovery then hit the power button. You will be taken into recovery. With the volume buttons, scroll down to Restore and Back Up. Press the track pad to select it. Scroll down to Back up and press the track pad button again. Once you have done that it will begin backing up. Put your phone down for about 5 minutes. It will come back to the previous menu when it is done. Press the track pad on Reboot the device. It will reboot. Once it downloads go http://androidforums.com/incredible...root-guide-updated-4-15-est-oct-1-2010-a.html and follow the directions.

Titanium Back up after root prior to flashing any rom and it will restore your apps for you. If you buy it, you won't have to press the install button for each app as they reinstall.

If you do not wipe data between Rom changes, you won't have to reinstall anything. Some apps need a wipe to work without bugs, some don't. If and when you do a wipe and you are reinstalling apps through Titanium Backup, uncheck any red apps, it will keep conflicts out of the new ROM.

Make sure you have your contacts synced in Gmail.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else that you need to back up.

I rooted on thursday and everything went smoothly, but pretty much all my apps broke, not all, some work, some work some, then get to a point and I have to forceclose. I am really new, but it seems to have something to do with SD card, maybe??? Uninstalling and reinstalling fixes it, not just a data wipe for the app. Any idea, did I do something wrong? Is it a permission thing maybe? I have a lot of apps, it's been a bit of a hassle, it's not that big of a deal, the extra functionality is v v cool. I am fixing them as I come across them.
Thanks for any info.

When you install your apps, try not installing the data with them, just the apps, it should eliminate most force close problems. If you want to try to go to menu>settings>applications and find the ones that are force closing and clear data and cache it may help.

I found out the hard way, the BEST way to screw up an otherwise smooth running ROM is to reinstall an app and data over what already exists on that ROM. NEVER and I mean NEVER install core HTC apps or data over a new ROM. It will Force Close over and over, making the ROM unstable and unusable.

Interesting. When I install new roms I always backup all apps+data, install the rom, then restore all apps+data with Titanium backup. I almost never have force close problems.

Addendum: Just to clarify myself a bit. I use Titanium to backup apps, their accompanying data and all system data. After the rom install, I restore all missing apps and their accompanying data but restore system data (bookmarks, calendar, etc.) selectively.

Hi, thanks for the info, I tried just wiping the data and that didn't help. I know now what I will do in the future, what the next post said, back it all up and uninstall all, then restore. It's been interesting, I am getting ready to do just that a posteriori, keeping fingers crossed, but no big deal if it craps out, I'll just be back where I am now.

Well, it was too easy. I rooted the phone which is incredibly easy [sorry], but pretty much all my apps broke. So first thing to do after the nandroid BU is get Titanium and back up all user apps and system data, then un-install all user apps, then restore all the missing apps with data and magically it's all hunky dory. Well, I still lost most of the widgets, but those are easy to replace. Since I hadn't seen anything about all apps breaking, I wasn't expecting that problem, maybe I haven't looked around enough?

Could be tough to find a lot of documentation because the act of rooting shouldn't break apps. Once you start using root to flash roms and kernels, then you're susceptible to app issues. Not sure what happened in your case.

Well, I am a master of getting myself into situations that no one else does or can explain  , it's congenital! I had perused many pages of stuff and saw no mention of this happening. The really weird thing is how some apps worked for a while before crapping out, like I used System Panel numerous times before it decided to forceclose. Still something nagging me head that it had something to do with the SD card, like trying to access it in a certain way glitched something somewhere. Just a poorly informed hunch.

I know exactly what you mean. There have been a ton of card issues with 2.2 that seem to be unexplainable. It became really obvious when all the non-rooters were accepting the OTA and many people ended up with cards that were altogether wiped or random files were missing. What could cause that?

I've always felt it could possibly be related to apps2sd. Maybe even an issue with the recognition of the presence or absence of an ext2 partition, perhaps confusing the setup process? It's kind of a reach though and I have zero proof. But having been a regular user of this forum since the release of this phone, I can attest to a huge spike in "SD card problem" threads since the release of 2.2, that is undeniable.
