What can I do with VPN?

After I flashed my Vibrant, I have new options that weren't previously available to me, namely a VPN option. I don't really know what a VPN is or what I can do with it...

Is it something like tethering where I can make a wireless hotspot for an iPad?

VPN = Virtual Private Network and is commonly used to create a secure connection to a workplace network using publicly available networks, such as the Internet.

Using VPN it is possible to access resources on the remote "work" network such as files and computers.
