Is there a way to have different tones for text messages/e-mails etc?

I hate that It's all one tone and unless im looking at the phone I can't tell which one has happened.
Absolutely, you can have different tones for emails, texts and individual callers of course. For email open the email app>hit menu soft key>Account settings>Notification Settings select ringtone.
For text [now I use Handcent so Im doing this from memory if you use the stock app] open the msg app>Menu>Settings> Notifications>select ringtone
For individuals again go to the contact and then Menu>Edit>Ringtone

You are awesome!
I know your rooted but do you know if it's normal for twlauncher to freeze allll the time? I'm hoping it's not my phone, I would have to be without it for a week when I exchange for a new one.
No its not normal at all. It should work flawlessly if you are out of the box just using TW.
Two thoughts, One, try using something like LauncherPro. See if that makes your homescreen experience better. You will want HomeSwitcher as well so you can toggle between TW and LP.
Two, if you still have problems in both TW and LP you likely have a gremlin and might consider a return for a defective unit.

Also, TSD just for clarification. When you say freeze do you mean it completely freezes and you cannot do anything at all and must pull the battery to restore function. Or do you mean what I would term hesitation. Like you open a program/app and it seems to hang/lag for 2-6 seconds before executing and following thru on your function. The first one should not happen unless you have a defective. The second condition, what many term lag is more common, the best way around it is a lagfix, not the OCLF from the market but the voodoo lagfix which basically is a revision of your SF's filesystem.

Get back to me with your response and we'll go from there. If its the second condition, I know you havent rooted yet but it will only take us 15-20 minutes to get you rooted, apply CWM and get you running voodoo. Your call of course. If you arent comfortable with taking things to the next level I understand; but its likely you will have to live with these occasional hiccups of hesitation.

When it lags it's def not a battery pull lag but I have to press the power button to get it to work again, it will freeze where the buttons on the bottom stay lit and the screen stays blank, it happened one time when I was using the music player most notably. I am def planning on rooting, we rooted the Eris last night and I was pretty impressed with what it can do. Will you still get ota updates if you root?

Also(and this is the absolute last question, I promise!) I've noticed when looking at a gray screen there seems to be a lighter half circle at the top of my page, is that a defect? I've been searching to see if anyone has reported that as a problem and can't find anything. I notice it when pandora boots up and a few other apps, it only shows on a gray screen though when I look at that area any other time it's completely normal looking.

I might be just being overly critical from all the stories I've heard of multiple returns.

Rooting alone does not block OTA's, post-root tinkering of course does. If fix/solve your lag problem you would want to apply the EXT4 extensions [voodoo]. That would reduce your lag issues by 90%+ I assure you of that. Maybe not 100% as I did notice one delay myself so far but its substantially better.
As for your other problem no I have never encountered that at all so I'd say not normal
