Root Help!!! should I update or not? 2.3.15

Hey i am new to the whole rooting deal with the x... I jus received and firmware update for my phone... says its a 2.3.15.... can any one help me... My firmware now is 2.1.....I dont wanna download it if its gonna affect me rooting my phone.. Thanks for the help

you can root that update. there's plenty of threads that will help you in doing that as well as other things. but yea you should update.

Rooting lets you access the "root" of your phone and lets user customize their android device with roms, themes, deleting bloat apps, etc.

I wouldn't get the OTA...just get the rooted and deodexed version that floating around so that if you mess up anything you won't be locked down with the moto bootloader

root allows you to flash custom roms and themes as well as applications that need root access.

i would just install the leaked version of 2.3.15 instead of the OTA so you don't get stuck with the f*d up moto bootloader.

Yeah,
IMO the best option would be to go with the 2.3.15 leak, that is until a full 2.2 SBF is released.
Even then though you'd have to weigh the advantage of an updated radio against the potential cost of someone cracking only the old bootloader.

At the time of this post, there was a system sbf that would recover your phone from any problems you had. As of last night, there is a full sbf for 2.2 so you can use it now which makes a lot of people feel safer (even though the system only sbf would recover you since all mods are done in system). I would upgrade to the OTA to get the new radio and the update they are currently working on to fix some bugs. If you alrady did the deodexed/rooted 2.3.15 leak, you can use the 2.1 sbf to go back to stock and get the OTA.
