Which verizon version of Droid for upgrade or wait?

I'm due for an upgrade. I currently have the env 3. I plan to use the phone for apps and the internet mostly. I don't make many phone calls (less than 20-30 min/day) and don't expect to use it a ton. i would like for it to have a great battery life and probably an actual keyboard (but not a necessity). what would be the best model? is there a model coming out soon i should consider? i saw the droid pro, would this be a good choice (like the keyboard, but it has a smaller screen)

If you want a keyboard and Motorola phone then your options are limited to the Droid 2 and the Droid Pro. The Droid Pro is not our yet so you might have to wait if this is your preferred phone. If you can do without the physical keyboard then the Droid X is an awesome phone. A really good non-Motorola choice would be the Samsung Fascinate. The screen is incredible indoors but somewhat more difficult to read while outside.

These are all great suggestions, but just be reminded that these phones do not have the same kind of battery life that your current phone probably has. Most people get a day or less out of an android phone. A lot of people I know that have feature phones go days without charging. Get used to being plugged in.

Yes my env3 can hold a battery for several days. i'm fine with plugging it in every night but would like it to last the whole day. my bf has the older droid with a slide out keyboard and it barely lasts a day. is this still the case with newer versions? i don't need a keyboard but would prefer it. if the ones without the keyboard are better, then i will get those. i can't switch from verizon though.

I have a Droid 2, which is your best and really only choice for a Verizon android phone with a keyboard. I get about 20-24hours on a full charge. I use Pandora radio for about 1-2 hours a day, several short phone calls, some texts, and a lot of email. Other users will tell you that they can only get 10-14 hours or even less. It is all based on how you use it. I leave the GPS receiver and WiFi off unless I need them, and keep the screen back light very low. Battery life seems to have improved from the old droid to the Droid 2. Unless you are a super heavy user, you shouldn't have any problems.

If you're stuck on Verizon, want an Android phone with a keyboard, then you have 4 real options right now.

Motorola Droid 2 - higher end phone, decent KB
LG Ally - mid-range phone, nice KB
HTC Merge - higher end phone, nice KB, November-ish release, world phone
Motorola Droid Pro - not sure on specs, Blackberry style KB, world phone

So there you have it, decide what you prefer. If you just want to surf the net and use a few apps, the Ally might be your best bet, plus it lets you stay with LG. A friend of mine has one and it's a nice phone.

Uncle Ben from Spiderman said "with great power comes great responsibility," but in the case of phones it's "with great power comes shorter battery life." As screens get bigger/brighter, processers get faster, etc, it uses more and more power. Battery technology will slowly catch up and the processing gets more refined, but not enough to offset the tremendous amount of juice these devices consume.

Alot of people love having the physical keyboard, personally I cannot use the thing. Most of the new Android phones come with what is (to me) a great alternative, Swype. Instead of having to type every letter in a word on the digital keyboard you just trace a line through the letters, it's very quick and surprisingly accurate. There's several demonstration videos on YouTube, although the best test would be to head to a VZW store and try it out for yourself.

If you absolutely must have a physical keyboard the Droid 2 is a great phone, my sister has one and loves it. If you want to try a digital keyboard have a look at the Droid X and Samsung Fascinate. The X probably has the best battery life with heavy use and all 3 come with Swype.

A person's usage has a huge impact on battery life. Don't expect the device to resolve all battery life issues. Your bf should probably analyze his usage and see what he can adjust.

As with any "better" question -- it's subjective. If the keyboard is better for you then it's better.

In my opinion, you can get a Droid X or Droid 2 now, or wait until next year and get a 4G phone that might have a dual core processor.

The keyboard in the Droid 2 is better then the Droid, but you should go to the store and try it and see if you like it.

That's an entirely opinion-based question and you'll get different answers depending on who you ask. There are plenty of great phones, which is "best" is going to depend on how you plan to use it, features, etc.

There's an R2D2 Droid out there now. I don't think it has any real hardware differences, it's just a special edition of the Droid2. But it may be worth considering just for entertainment purposes. Droid R2D2

Good answer. Every phone has its pros and cons and quirks as well. I think any of the big 4 verizon androids phones: x, d2, dinc, and sf are great buys just depends on what you are going for. Not to dis the LG Ally, but if you are buying a phone on contract that you plan on having for 1-2 years that may be a little antiquated. My advice it to always buy the most (or one of the most) advanced devices thats out so that it ll be a little more future proof for the time you own it.

The ally may have been a nice little phone when launched (although very underpowered compared the droid 1 that came out 5 months before) but in a year it ll be a dinosaur. Just my 2 cents.

i know i don't want the ally, my sister has it and hates it. i realize the "best" phone subject is an opinion, i would like to know what everyone's opinion is the "best" phone out now or coming out in the near future. i want a great phone now since i will have it for 2 years.
