Next big thing?

So im curious, whats the next big thing going to be in phones? Right now it seems to be the galaxys phones, evo, and droid x/incredible. However im interested in whats next,and when. I want more than speculation here, i want some cold hard evidence / pics / betas.

Not sure about andriods phones but I believe the X, evo, incredible and galaxy s line up is good enough for the remainder of the year. I thought there was an evo look alike coming typo verizon?

correct me if im wrong but from what i read earlier, the htc HD2 by tmobile IS the evo, with windows mobile on it. people have gotten froyo with sense installed on the HD2.

You bring up a question for which I've not heard an answer! Not as far as Android is concerned anyway. Right now things seem pretty quiet on that front. About the only thing that I know to be news is the G2, and it doesn't sound particularly interesting to me.

I seem to remember something about Motorola phones coming to AT&T, but no specifics. Not like I'd go to AT&T again anyway. And Veeerizon...great network but they screw with the phones too much to lock them down...and the iPhone is headed their way. I prefer not to be on a network with a bunch of crazed iPhone users. Look what happened to AT&T!

I swapped my hd2 for the vibrant and I wonder now had I messed with it as much our found forums like this for windows I wonder how much better the experience would have been. Probably just as bad their lack of apps was very surprising. But I should have listened or paid attention to everything I read about how bad windows 6.5 mobile was. However from everything this phone does our is supposed to do this is by far the superior device.

Windows Mobile 6.5 had a lousy reputation. Supposedly WM 7 is actually very good. Time will tell of course. Could be big on the corporate side of things.

The next big thing is going to be announced Jan 6-9 at the CES in Vegas. It is going to be LTE Android phones on Verizon and I'm sure the other carriers will announce something then too.

LTE is one of those "I'll believe it when I see it" things for me. A few years back 3g was supposed to be the end all be all, and it never did reach the heights it was supposed to. I mean, it's good, but it used to be talked about in the way LTE or WiMax is now.

Actually I did read somewhere about Motorola bringing something new to At&T 1st quarter of 2011, I want to say Tegra or something similar, but unfortunately, I wasn't paying much attention as I don't care for AT&T myself.

i think the next big push.. will be new tablets..
many will start dropping into carriers.. by end of 2010 and all through 2011!

I also think HTC is on a new interesting track with their new HTCsense.com. It brings cloud computing and services that was missing from Google and adds value to a particular brand. Other makers will start to bring more interesting services to raise the bar even more! the possibilities are huge!

Happy Coincidence, I just happened to find another reference to what I was referring to.

The Motorola Tegra 2 phone,the rumours are stating that it will be a touch-only model that has a display between 3.7-4.3 inches, feature a dual-core 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor, and include a front-facing camera.


So other than tablets, it's looking like the next big thing to brag about having in your phones are Dual cores/tegras.

it seems like the market has now been flooded with top notch hardware and simply getting a phone with a faster processor than what's now available with the snapbirds and hummingdragons isn't going to give you any radically different experience
there isn't really any software that would need anything more powerful

just ask yourself, how would you improve the evo/incredible/galaxy-s ?
hardware wise there doesn't seem to be all that much to improve for now

Big things would be using as a PC replacement with built in laser keyboards and projectors. Or data contracts and very compressable codec's to use the phone as a regular mini TV etc.
Ok, you can do video now, but it's difficult. Re-code takes ages, wipe out your data allowance in one movie etc. etc.

But new Galaxy's, CES announcements are all slow evolution. Even gingerbread is not a "Big Thing", sure it will be nice. but it will offer nothing new to speak of.

I've been able to have databases, lists, web accesss, email etc. on my phone for years......
good question though, what really will be big next?

The problem is that a lot of people on the forums seem to think that each new device is the next big thing. What's "big" depends on who you're asking.

you can also already use a phone like a pc with hdmi-out and usb/bluetooth keyboards and mice (tho' not android specifically for the latter)
and what do you have to re-encode? new phones can handle hd video playback just fine

assuming it'll keep the promise (or rumor...) of fixing the so called fragmentation by allowing straight forward os updates, i'd say that's huge

Essentially, the hardware of the current top of the line phones has caught up with the software, so not much is going to change, as far as the experience goes, until new software comes out.

Upcoming Software:
IMO, the next really big thing will be the new HTC Sense. Then it will be Android 3.0 I guess (haven't read up on what it's going to change).

Hardware:
The market will begin to fill with more front facing cameras, so video chat will become more prevalent. Aside from that, as stated earlier by mrqs, the new hardware in these things isn't going to change much as far as power goes. Yeah, we will see a dual core hit, but it's probably not going to be a huge difference beyond how well the current top of the line phones handle operations. The most significant things that we will see are:
4.3" with a querty hit the market
HTC's version of the SAMOLED
and Duel Core processors

Next big thing is Gingerbread, faster processors - dual core, better graphics drivers, etc. Sadly the only thing missing is better battery technology.

And we all want more than speculation, we all would love pics / specs / betas, unfortunately that ain't gonna happen.

I think the next REALLY big thing is going to be nano batteries, unfortunately they are just too expensive to produce to be feasible for another 5-10 years. When they finally make it to cell phones the batteries will be ALOT smaller and you will only have to charge your phone once a month if ever depending on how they implement the technology.

I forgot about that. The Samsung Moment 2 was/is supposed to have a DTV chip and a port for attaching an antenna. Granted, this was several months ago (7-8) and the Moment 2 has probably (I would guess) been scrapped since the epic train-wreck of the first version.

But the concept may still be very alive and well in future Samsung releases. I know that all of us over in the Moment forum were emphatic when hearing about it, so there certainly is consumer demand for it.

I don't think nuclear will ever be implemented in commercial anything, there is to much shielding and maintenance required. Would you really want your phone full of lead and water?

Plus the nano batteries already exist, they are just very expensive.
