I can swear I have seen this discussed before but I just cant find that thread now. Google search gave some results, but none that was helpful. Can anyone here link me to right place or answer me right here. Got a new epic, but firmware is stuck at DG17. I clicked update firmware many times now, but it comes back and says no update available. I am connected to 3g right now. I don't have any experience with Odin and manual updates, so if manual is the only way, can you also please link me to some really detailed step by step manual update guide.

Thanks guys!

You need to update to DI07 first, and then DI18 after that. Having said that, I had a HELL of a time trying to update from DI07 to DI18. I kept getting errors while trying to update. So I downloaded the DI18 zip file to my SD card, and tried that - still errored out.

Then I did a full factory reset, wiped the dalvik cache, etc., still no luck.

After being pissed off at having wasted a couple of days on this, I just downloaded the entire DI18 stock ROM from xda, and flashed it to my phone. It's finally updated to DI18.

I swear the update on the Epic is probably the most painful thing I have done on an Android phone.

Yes you did see this here before. My new Epic would also not update and was deemed defective by Sprint service. They could not even update it manually with a download. I'm told that some phones were loaded with bad master software at the factory that wont let the phone update properly. The only way to fix this I'm told is to brick the phone by completely removing everything off the phone including the operating system and re load it, but my Sprint service center did not have the Epic master software to do the job so it was deemed I had to get it replaced. Also check that you have the $10 add on 4G fees active on your service not having this on your account could keep you from getting updates as well. You can also try logging into the Android market and download some free app that you might use sometimes this forces the phone into update mode.

thanks dude looks like im stuck in DG17 and not sure what to do....whats the difference if i were to get the update?

Like I said earlier. I was stuck on an even older version. I ended up just hard resetting through Sprint Tech Support's guidance.

That ended up resolving the issue because as soon as I powered back up the 1st update started...then the 2nd update started and now my Epic is completely updated. I'd much have rather gone through this issue than the issue I had with my EVO being bricked due to an update.

They tried hard resetting mine several times but it still would not update. As long as you are stuck in DG17 you will NEVER be able to update to any newer versions. The latest version is DI18 but there were TWO other updates between DG17 and DI18 without the other updates DI18 wont load thats the real issue. Take it to Sprint service if you are out of your 30 days or back to the store where you purchased it if you are within the first 30 days for an even exchange.

yea i just got back they gave me a whole new phone plus my ear piece was defective

Yes, they are treating this issue as a manufacturing defect. This is why they are replacing them. From what I was told it was one small batch of phones that got the bad operating system software before leaving the factory. It seems Samsung is well aware it happened too. Of course we were the lucky recipients! :p

I wonder if they'll still replace mine, even though the software updated after the hard reset?

Well I kinda doubt it since yours did update. You might have had a different issue keeping you from updating because Sprint reset mine and even tried a hardwire download of the updated software and my phone still refused to update.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the 411 anyway and glad they resolved it for those that weren't able to update.
