Movers from DX... ANY Regrets?

Been reading over many of the posts for the last few days here. I long ago started with the INC, gave to my girl and got the X, and now with about 2 weeks left am considering the SF. Anyone who switched from the X to the fascinate having any regrets of doing the switch? Would you do the same if you had do do it all over again? I know being in the SF forum will probably get me some skewed answers (which isnt bad) But please be as subjective as possible!

Im really considering the switch as I simply cant get used the the more true, but in my eyes dull screen of the X, as well as the camera hump.

Well I have never owned an X, but my father has one. That was the phone that made me WANT to go android and pay the 30 extra bucks a month, so naturally, I like the X. With that said, I could NOT get used to the hump and ergonomics (Or lack there of) on the X. Its a fantastic phone, with the screen size and AMAZING camera, but it just didnt do it for me. So I decided on the Fascinate and have never been happier. And when compared to my father's Droid X, the screen isnt even in the same league. I know a lot of people say that, but it is true. The Fascinate has a screen that could possibly even rival the Iphone.

i actually went back to the X though i still have the fascinate. the final(?) straw was when i could NOT read the fascinates screen in bright sunlight, held the X up in the same light and could read it fine.

i really do like the fascinates screen, except in sunlight, and i like the touchwiz layout better than motoblur and games also play smoother on the fascinate......but......the fascinate goes to a lock screen while i'm on a call, gmail comes to it slower than my X for some reason, the keyboard on the X is one of the best virtual keyboards, no noise cancellation on the fascinate, only way to wake fascinate screen is with power button, flaky GPS........i know some of these things have a work-around and I'm not saying the X is 'better' or the fascinate is not as good, it's just that the X has less 'annoyances' for me....haha, that's a funny way to put it but that's what it comes down to!!

also, since my eyes aren't so great, you have the option to use larger fonts in gmail running froyo, which helps me a lot.....so take all these 'opinions' that you get and throw them out the window, then go try the phone for yourself as you're going to get a different experience from everyone on here!

i'm adding this after reading the post above mine....see what i mean about differing opinions? fascinate screen is REALLY nice but for ME it's not as easy to read outdoors as my X.

I just got my Fascinate last month, I was torn between these two phones as well. Both have their ups and downs, which you prefer is 100% personal preference.

That said, I played with both and went with the Fascinate, although I could have been happy with either.

With the X you get:
+More screen real estate
+8MP Camera w/dual LED flash
+Froyo
+All 512MB of RAM to use
+More internal memory
+HDMI out
/Dedicated camera button
/Physical buttons instead of capacitive touch
/A truer "Android" look for the app drawer
/LED screen that is truer but duller
-The camera hump
-A physically bigger phone
-A much heavier phone
-Processor can't keep up w/Hummingbird

With the Fascinate you get:
+Smaller phone
+VERY light weight
+SAMOLED screen
+Hummingbird processor
+Lots of 3D power
+Built in Task Manager
/"iPhone-esque" app drawer
/Touch-sensitive home buttons
-Buggy GPS (for the moment)
-Android 2.1
-Smaller screen
-"Less True" colors
-Few 3D apps (Hummingbird loses it's advantage)
-512MB RAM, 325MB that you can use (ATM)

Here's how I see it. I think that in their current states, the Droid X is a better phone largely because it's been out longer and has had more time to be debugged. BUT, I think that in the next few months the Fascinate will show it's potential and probably end up a little better than the X. They'll both be great in the end and which works better will depend on what you want out of the phone.

Thats funny that you mention the X did better in direct sunlight as all Ive read elsewhere is that the fascinate actually does better. As far as touch wiz goes i am a Launcher Pro Plus guy and plan on doing that first thing, well might do home switch to try TW as well but certainly plan on LP being the goto in the end. I guess my opinion of the screen is slightly skewed coming from the INC and having gotten used to that screen it was a big switch for me. The known GPS issue is not too big of a deal for me and the lag fix I plan on handling ASAP. The area where i live I have 4 bars at any point in my house and downtown office.

How about battery life vs the x? I Gchat, have a few widgets running and check emails periodically throughout the day. I plan on having the apps update in the background as I like my information timely .

I too am curious about this, I have considered getting rid of my X for the Fascinate but I am cautious for a couple of reasons. One is the reception/call quality on the Fascinate. I am perfect reception/call quality on my Droid X.

Also I am concern on the battery life on the Fascinate compared to my Droid X as well. My battery life is terrific right now, have no problems making it through the day. One of our managers here cannot make it through the day on his Epic without it needing a charge.

I would usually take the chance and do it if I was doing it through Verizon, but I am going to have to go the ebay/craigslist route and I won't be able to take them back to Verizon with the one year manufactures warranty is something is wrong with the phone.

So it would be nice to know what other users who have switched think?

Well even though if might not be fair to compare them since one is on 2.2 and one is one 2.1 , I think it would still help others out if we had an idea on how it is. I don't expect it to be perfect, but it will give me and probably others a general idea on how the battery life is.

From what I've read battery life depends on how you use the phones. The Droid X has longer call battery life but the Fascinate has longer standby battery life, so I guess it depends on how much you're using your phone.

Well that would be probably good for me, I don't talk on the phone too much, need it for work emails and other things. I don't know what to do.

I've actually read the opposite. At the same time, it seems that there's been issues with the Fascinate drawing more power w/o use simply due to it having inferior reception to the X at times (before I excite the mob, I mean the SF isn't close to being always in par to the X's reception abilities), so it has to work harder.

I would guess that this is only in areas that have inferior signal and the phone is having to stretch to keep a signal and switch from 1x to EVDO back and forth

How many of the issues and signal strength problems do you think could POTENTIALLY be fixed with the 2.2 or later updates?

I went through a few X's before I purchased the Fascinate. I had a stream of hardware issues with the X (i.e: hard buttons coming loose and LCD issues) that to me were deal breakers. I think the X has alot of potential but imho Moto missed the mark by locking the bootloader. Now the Fascinate has its share of issues. All which I’m sure for the most part will be resolved with 2.2. Also the Fascinates hardware is a beast. The Hummingbird Processor is a step above the OMAP on the Droids. And most importantly the SF's bootloader is open. The Fascinate is the underdog on Verizon, but I believe when the dust settles it will be the modders phone of choice. The original Droid opened the door. The D2 and X closed the door. The Fascinate is one of the last truly open phones on the market currently. And with the Voodoo Project ( Project Voodoo, Galaxy S improvements | Open Source project homepage )in full swing I only see greatness coming for the Fascinate.

So according to the article, the Fascinate's battery lasts 81.5% as long during use, but nearly 284% longer on standby. I'm sure there's lots of variables that need to be accounted for but they are interesting figures.

That is entirely possible. The basement of my in-law's place is devoid of Verizon reception and your phone will fight all night trying to find a signal (which will drain your battery like crazy). I dunno how it affects the Fascinates as when we brought them there we had them charging every night, but with my old LG Dare if you forgot to plug that thing in (even if it had full battery) it was dead by morning.

I guess after reading all this and taking everything into consideration, the most important thing to me is the smoothness of the phone and the ability for it not to lag. With the lag fix (part of voodoo I believe) Does the Fascinate give everyone a better experience in this respect?

I have not installed any of the Voodoo fixes on my phone yet. But from following others that have it makes the Fascinate experience super smooth. What they are doing is optimizing/tweaking the file structure on the Galaxy S phones. Also can remove all traces of Bing and the other bloatware Vzw puts on their devices by rooting and following the instructions. I plan on rooting and de-Binging this weekend Hope that helps.

In my limited ability to compare, I would say that my phone running at the default 1GHz with Voodoo was about the same speed as running at an overclocked 1.2GHz without Voodoo. And with both now, it's even better!

My Fascinate has been flawless not like the x was, constant reboots and signal loss. Motorola finally acknowledge the reboot issue today! The Fascinate IMO is the best to date verizon has!

I've spent extensive time testing and benchmarking numerous voodoo kernels in the past week. Prior to voodoo's release, I tested out some OC kernels as well. I assure you you will have a better experience if you install [re-format with] voodoo. Now personally I recommend having an OverClocked & UnderVolted cpu; more speed and performance and better life. However, if you made me pick between OC v. voodoo I'd take voodoo. Now again I can and do have both but it is true a few people have some issues with the OC/UV kernels.
