Hi all,

I have seen some reports that after going to Froyo you need to perform a factory reset. I presume that this will wipe all the applications, user data, etc.

Question here is: Before starting the upgrade process in Kies (which will offer to backup your contacts for you...) what should I backup?

Is there a program recommended for this backup? Is it safe to restore everything or should I only partially put things back?

Thank you for your input, guys! :)

Cheers,
J

Astro File Manager will allow you to back up apps that does NOT come with the phone. For most people, this should be enough.

However, if you want to back up apps that come with the phone (mini diary, Asphalt, etc.), you will need Titanium backup which requires root access. Rooting on 2.1 is easy. Rooting on 2.2, not so much. (though that might have changed since the last time I checked.) So it's up to you.

Can't they just be reinstalled after the Froyo upgrade? I mean, if there are no real personal data.
I don't really have any "personal" data in the apps that come with the phone... I don't care about loosing my scores at various games for example

Oh they will be installed on froyo, it's just that I actually use the mini diary app, and I don't like replaying Asphalt over and over again.

I used Titanium Backup and it (as usual) worked wonders.

Then, when you upgrade to 2.2, you can root it by using Chainfire's tool from XDA and following the instructions, it's really simple - link here.

Here's what I did step by step:

1) Undo Lagfix
2) Backup everything I wanted and copied over to my desktop PC just in case
3) Undo Root
4) Reboot PC and Reboot phone for safety reasons
5) Upgrade to Froyo using Kies
6) Do a factory reset
7) Root using the above method
8) Set up & restore everything to my phone
9) Apply One Click Lag Fix

Works perfectly now.

Quick question.

Will I need to re-Root the phone once I have updated to 2.2 in order to restore data using Titanium backup?
I haven't had to restore anything yet tg :)

If you lose all your apps/data, you will have to re-root for Titanium, yes.

But some people (including me) were lucky enough not to lose anything. I did a factory reset though, so had to re-root either way.

I had to do a Factory Reset after installing Froyo (probably because I didnt uninstall "oneclicklagfix" properly). Well, I lost my apps and my texts but didnt lose other data like phone numbers, photos, video etc

I am wondering if the unroot process is really necessary. Surely the super user privilege should be overwritten once you flash froyo?

Yes it gets overwritten. Back when I flashed to XWJM8 the root got removed by itself.
I am just a bit paranoid about bricking my phone so took all (un)neccessary precautions before flashing, partly because I don't trust KIES a bit:)
