Does google need to be held accountable?

need to be held accountable?? i think maybe,,

I think google needs to tread carefully when issuing license to companies,

as this issue with SE has really soured my mouth with the way android may be used and abused by such companies

slow releases of existing operating system will unfortunately be its demise

just my 2cents

so does google need to be held accountable is some of this,???

How ??
Why ??

they supply the operating system its down to the end user (SONY, HTC, MOTO etc) as to how and when they supply the updates - nothing to do with google at all

If you bought a car from a local dealer you wouldn't go straight to head office to get a service done would you ??

head office would certainly make sure that the dealer was offering the proper service, are we getting what google would want,,, if so,, im afraid that either google is gong to have to start producing phones or android wont last,,, imho

Oh my - google did try producing phones - the G1 - and it was shockingly bad

Android is the quickest growing OS ever - so i think it will last - especially after the last output of statistics

As for my earlier comment - you missed the point entirely - your FIRST point of call to get a service would never be head office, you would always go back to the DEALER - if the dealer was being slow you then complain to the DEALER again - only after a while does it escalate to the top - but what you have to remember - sony IS offering the right service

As its current platform is 1.6 and they have supplied numerous updates in less than a year i think that is a huge step forward compared to their history (Satio anyone??) Their is absolutely no way on earth part of Googles T's & C's state that you MUST UPDATE TO THE LATEST VERSION OF ANDROID so if they choose to operate 1.6 that is their call - if they choose to upgrade to 2.1/2.2 again this is SONY's decision

Like in retail - you never give 100% of discount allowed - you build up to it as its a choice

Besides which, in fairness, this IS Sony Ericssons FIRST venture into the Android OS which in the halls of good grace does allow them a little leeway in terms of development

You don't sack a new employee on their first day - what you do is encourage them - which i suggest is what google will be doing

Much better philosophy than barging into somebody else's business and telling them what to do

But hey - i guess if you want the latest and greatest now and don't care how it comes about then i suppose the bullying technique is where its at - which is essentially what you want google to do

For that statement to be true then you would be happy if Apple hadn't re-designed the iPhone 3 times, and just kept updating the software ??

Yet on the latest release of their iOS they clearly stated that older models would not be supported - isn't that exactly the same as Sony not giving the X10 2.2 or 3.0 ?? or even "dropping it like a hot potato" to design a new, improved version of the X10

don't see Apple consumers in arms about it

if your computer is running windows xp do you moan at HP or Dell as to why they havent updated you to Vista yet?

Bottom line is no manufacturer has to update it, if they do so then all well and good. If consumers dont like it they dont buy that manufacturers next product. You bought a phone with android 1.6 on it, there were other phones out at the time with android 2.1 on, if you specifically wanted that you should have bought one of them.

first off,, i bought it with the staements made by SE that and when updates are coming to no avail as of yet,,,,

and to throw apple into the mix,,, the 3g is what i call a old phone yet it was updates to os4,,

third we know the phone has the power to handle updates , so its not a phone issue,, its a issue with the manufacturer,,

im just saying google needs to be careful,, cause mark my word the general consumer will get frustrated ,, and google is not a dumb company and im sure corporate has had this exact conversation

The 3g an old phone ?? you can still buy it brand new in the box - thats not old

As for the updates - they are coming - just slower than first expected - as stated by SKIMMINSTONES - its down to the manufacturer when they release - and you have just openly admitted that the reason you bought it was because it WOULD get updated (not that it would get updated by September)

Would hate to be a pregnant lady in your family - right thats it - we're taking you to hospital now to drag that baby out - we were told it would be here by 15th October - what ya mean it could be late - thats not acceptable

lolololol:D;):D;)

big difference between late and LAte my friend,,, if baby was nine months one week late no biggie,,, but 12 months be worried,,, try another scenario brother

ive been through this issue with sony before,,,i forgave and forgot,, shame on me,,, sony got me again,,, oh well,,,

12 months late ?? the update is only 3 weeks delayed and already confirmed for roll-out in the next few weeks - that my friend is crystal clear

The reason why the phone didn't LAUNCH with 2.1 was explained on the Sony Developers blog - along lines of

If we had taken the decision to launch with 2.1 this would have delayed our release schedule for the X10 family, as 2.1 became available during the development of the handsets, therefore we took the decision not to delay the launch and to provide 1.6 as standard.

From what you are saying you wanted 2.1 way back so the question is - why didn't you just buy a 2.1 handset at the time ?>

and you can seriously justify your reasons for NEEDING all of those personally ??

Not trying to stir up a hornets nest but there is barely any difference between a screen doing 65k and 16m colours as most apps are designed using about 2000 colour pallett

no adobe flash - you seriously need this on the phone
camera flash - again as its an LED it would make barely any difference

surprised you haven't asked for multi-touch too

multi touch i dont give a rats ass about

see now you are just trying to make yourself feel good,,
we as consumers didnt ask for the stuff ,, SE said they where bringing it,,,
then they should bring it,, they made promises to sell phones and didnt deliver and that you cant deny,,
and update is not going to be till 2011,, come on 3.0 will be out by then,,,
im glad you are happy with yours SE must be excitied,,the majority are not happy how everything is gone down,, and you can use a google product to see that,, google search,,,
so maybe it is stuff i dont need,, principle can be a strong factor also.. and SE doesnt have it,,, and if i was google,, and it was my os I wouldnt be happy as it will become a reflection on them

I've lost interest in the whole 2.1 thing, how much difference will it really make? Personally, I find the x10 to be a pretty good phone and it does everything (and a lot more) that I require. Granted, it would be nice to have the extra features offered by 2.1, but it is not a dealbuster to me. I will bet money that as soon as we get 2.1, folks will complain that we haven't got 2.2.

Sorry but I gotta side with MrWomble and slugpace on this.

Sony have, so far, given everything they promised. They have postponed the 2.1 update a few times but that doesn't mean it wont happen. Also, in the US they did make a mistake on the website stating the phone was multi-touch, but this was no more than a mistake, not a promise.

In my opinion, when someone buys a phone, they should know what they're getting, so I don't understand why alot of people continue to moan about not having 2.2 on the Xperia, if Sony never actually promised it. If it's 2.2 you want, then maybe you should have purchased a phone that has Android 2.2, or if it's 2.1 you want, have a little patience, it's not like they're taking years, they postponed it by a month, it's not a long time to wait is it.

I purchased the Xperia, knowing it was 1.6 and also knowing that 2.1 was due to be rolled out in September, but when they moved it back to October I didn't throw any hissy fits like many others did, I was OK with it, as were many others on this forum, 1 month is not really a long time to wait, and I'm fine with that. Also, I am on T-Mobile (UK) and they announced that they will start rolling out the updates at the end of November, but I was still fine with that, at the moment I have everything I need with 1.6, the only thing I'm looking forward to with 2.1 is 720p HD video recording, and the Live wallpapers, but it's not a major necessity, it's just something I would love to have.

Google nor Sony are in the wrong, Sony just simply decided to put Android 1.6 on the Xperia X10 for whatever reasons, then left it up to the consumer to chose if they wanted to purchase it or not, knowing it had Android 1.6.
In my opinion, anyone who purchased this phone and moaned about not having the latest Android OS, knowing it was only on Android 1.6, is a total idiot, because they knew damn well, that it only had 1.6, and for those that bought it, not knowing it only had Android 1.6, maybe it will teach them to research a phone before purchasing it next time

How, in any way, does that blog post say that it will not be released at the end of October? It simply states that the update was postponed, and if you look at the date on that post (24th September), you will notice that it was posted a day after SE officially announced that the update was being postponed. Even if they did postpone it again, I wouldn't really be bothered as the X10 has everything I need.

Why on earth would Rogers be unhappy with Sony's lack of progress with this update? What has it got to do with them? Apart from the fact people using an Xperia on the Rogers network, but that's no reason for Rogers to be unhappy with the lack of progress. All carriers leave the phone manufacturers to do what they want with the phones, as long as they have customers, they're happy. You say you think this because you're reading between the lines? Well either you are reading way below the lines or I could be wrong, but it's definitely not likely, not with carriers in the UK anyhow. As far as I know, some carriers will say anything to make the customers happy, maybe they made it seem like they were unhappy about it but in reality they may have been just saying it, thinking it would satisfy you or calm you down, as you would be lead to believe they are agreeing with whatever you say. That sounds more like a carrier to me

If you researched the phone before purchase, why on earth do you own it if you're not happy with it, as you don't seem to be even the slightest happy it. As for the sales people, everyone knows not to listen to everything a salesman or women says, as their job is to try and sell as many as they can, so they will say anything to sell you something. As a former salesman i know this, as I had to say anything to try and get people to do things, and even when they originally didn't want to, most of them would in the end. But it's a common fact that most people should know

Also, you state that 2.1 will not give the phone what it needs, please acquaint me on the things you think it needs

As usual CuBz you put it more straight forward than i do - but agin this is the point that seems to get lost in these forums

if we wanted 2.1 when we got the X10 we should have got the HTC Desire instead

Exactly! I was stuck between the Desire and the Xperia, and I went with the Xperia, because it was more to my liking, I was aware of the OS version each phone had, but the X10 seemed better IMO

Wow, 2 long posts in one thread and I didn't use one single smiley...shocking! lol

did you actually read it,, i pulled this out of it,,,

Rikard Skogberg made the following points:
On Xperia firmware roadmap

  • “We of course admit we have issues, that’s why we had to delay things. This is of course our fault, it’s our plan, our product and our planned timing failed. As easy as that.”
  • As a result of this delay, the second firmware update (2.1x that brings UXP improvements) has also been delayed and will now roll out in early 2011.
i never once said i hated the phone,, and i have said it is a good phone,, but it is far from being perfect,,incall volume, wifi problems, battery problems,,,

and maybe a delay doesnt bother you,, but it does me extremely as i want and need skype on my phone.

and why would it bother rogers,, well if people are calling everyday im sure its not a pleasure for them,, and if you read on the multitude of people are not happy...
