Samsung trustworthy?

If I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S, would it be fair to expect the phone to continue getting new updates. or is it more likely that Samsung would just move on to a newer device

Well, as much as I LOVE to bash companies and the government as we live in a fascist country; the Vibrant however is a part of the GalaxyS series phones which are Samsung's biggest money makers so I think it's safe to assume that the updates will come accordingly. Not like the Behold II which was basically an empty promise for a 2.0 update.

True and I do think we'll get froyo, but they are already 1-2 months and counting behind HTC and Motorola. That's not great either, especially if it still doesn't come by mid november.

Yes that's true, Samsung is behind (gee, what a surprise); however, the OP just asked if he/she bought a Galaxy S phone, would he/she get the update or would Samsung ditch a Galaxy S phone for a newer one. Kinda like they did with the Behold II, lol.

Yes you can expect updates. Well they are already rolling out a minor update to improve things and we can expect Froyo probably around this time next month. As far as I know there are no other updates promised but I'm thinking if updates (improvements/ fixes) are needed, then we will get them. I'm also thinking there is a chance we will get the firmware after Froyo but that has definitely not been promised.

I'm in agreement with Ghost. This is my first and last Samsung phone after spending about 4 hours unbricking my phone after an OTA update.
How naive of me to think that an official OTA update would "never" do harm to my phone and I don't have to make a backup ROM to save my settings....

You say that now, but wait until they come out with their quadcore 2ghz CPU/GPU capable of 735mil/triangles 4.9inch 3D megasuperpwnzorz amoled screen with the holographic projection camera and 1TB internal memory. You know damn well you'll be lined up in a snowstorm overnight waiting to get the limited initial run of 200k units.

Actually I'm waiting for the one that has the built in transporter and all you have to do is hit a button and your on your way. who needs a phone when you can talk in person. I just wont buy it from Samsung to may bugs and I'll let your imagination think of the possibilities.

TBH, if technology had advanced to that point, it would be far more energy-efficient to simply have a direct mind-link via cyber-cortical implants. "Wet works" technology - think nano-tech-based cell phone integrated directly into your brain tissue.

If you think that sounds outrageously far-fetched, consider that Google already has AI-piloted cars (no human driver!) driving around California.

I give it 20 years.

I thought that might be where you got that. It certainly is not a "promise" to further improve the T-Mobile Vibrant's GPS. That announcement pertains to the international I9000.

For that platform, directly controlled by Samsung, the manufacturer elected to defer its GPS fix to be bundled with Froyo instead of releasing the GPS update first.

But my understanding is that the GPS code is already included in the firmware updates recently rolled out for the Vibrant and Captivate. In other words, you folks got it earlier and are already using it. (The anecdotal reviews are mixed, so I am not sure whether Vibrant and Capticvate users have a real fix or not. But I think what you have is what you can expect to get -- the "optimized" GPS originally promised these platforms in September.)

I9000 users have just had to wait a little longer for an official rollout, although there have been leaked firmware versions in Europe in rough parallel with those that preceded the official deployments in the U.S.

Actually, that's not the only release that mentions the "GPS fix" that will be included in Froyo for the Vibrant. There is another link which I didn't have time to dig up that I found over at XDA and the Vibrant is mentioned as is a GPS enhancement.

Thanks. I look forward to reading that when you find it. I thought I had read all the chatter on the issue at xda, and I recall no such announcement. Of course, I could have missed it.

EDIT: Well, I searched at xda, where I am a pretty regular reader and commenter. I can find no report of an announcement by either Samsung or T-Mobile that a further GPS fix is forthcoming for the U.S. Vibrant bundled with Froyo. So until you post such a link, I must assume that there is none.

I think the problem with Samsung is that they need to get rid of the people in charge. The board should get rid of the Ceo and that Indian guy who's name I forget. The focus should be on increasing quality control, more research and development, and supporting your products in a timely manner. It appears they are more concerned on just releasing one product after the other, while forgetting about the products they just released yesterday.

Sad part is that's how business is. I don't blame them though. For example, as a kid I would shovel neighbor's driveways when it snowed for like $5. If it snowed again the next day and they expected me to come back and shovel it again for free I'd look at them like they're crazy. It's no different in this case.

It's the same for any technology. Your technology will be the greatest and newest for one day, then wake up the next day and there is something better. If companies continue to support them forever they will never sell new models and never make money.

Plus how is Samsung not trustworthy? Every company discontinues service to certain things eventually. Nothing lasts forever.

So it is acceptable to release phones with a busted GPS? No GPS optimization for over 3 months? Getting a good Vibrant is like a box of chocolates, you never know what screen color tint you are going to get. We don't expect Samsung to support the phone for 10 yrs, but come on, 4 months and all we got was a GPS update, an update that would not have been necessary had they launched a working GPS.

Plus the logic makes no sense. When you buy any computer, you can update the software to any future OS you want, as long as the hardware is capable.

Android should be the same, just get rid of all these damn manufacturer and carrier add-ons, and have Google release all future updates that work globally on all phones as long as the phone can handle it. All Google needs is the drivers, technically they can get it from the component manufacturer.

Imagine buying a computer and being told anytime you want a windows update you need to get new hardware

BTW I'm not a big apple fan, but even apple was supporting the original iPhone when newer hardware versions of the iPhone were available. Did apple tell the original iPhone owners to get lost and purchase new hardware? NOPE
I may be wrong, but I believe even the new iPhone os was released for older iPhones.

It is just good business to support your products, even old ones. Just because Samsung doesn't do it, doesn't mean other companies behave the same way.
