Doubts about deisre

hey guys, i'm planning to buy HTC desire. I've doubt about its battery life.
My daily usage 'll be somewhat like this:
Atleast 1 and a half hour music play.
2hrs browsing
few photos/videos
few calls
lot of 'smsing'.

Will the battery run out within a day if i use the phone as stated above?

And 'll i be able to record HD videos with the OS update to android 2.2??

Ok. Easy one first. HD video is a no-no with the Desire. If HD video is a must then avoid the Desire like the plague. You'll be sorely disappointed. You're better off waiting for the Desire HD, getting an iPhone 4 or the Nokia N8 (although the Symbian ^3 UI looks dreadful).

My take on the battery is this: if you don't mind charging every night and carrying a charger around (and perhaps having a USB cable/charger at school/college/work) then you'll be fine.

The battery will last for around 5 hours continuous use. So your predicted use looks fine.

but but but if you're looking to take good quality photos - forget it. The camera plastic will be ruined within weeks. There are many workarounds but in all honesty it's unacceptable at this moment. Again, wait for the HD or get an iPhone 4 or Nokia N8.

i have a different view to widehead with 720p video
if you record using iso800 then 720p video is easily just as comparable to iphone4
where it lacks quality is the audio recording. theres no noise cancellation at all and its badly compressed.

battery lasts me just under 2 days, i have to charge it on second day when i get home. ill be honest my phone doesnt get that much use apart from about 20mins gaming and about 4 phone calls, maybe the odd text each day.

Photos is an odd one, they are nice and clear in the right light, the flash is dire.
The is an issue with the back cover where they have used a plastic cap instead of glass.
one thing i did note that others have failed to mention is that you think its getting scratched but its not. in htc's infinite wisdom they have painted on a slight anti glare filter on the the plastic (it has a green tinge) because this is painted on it corrodes with exposure to anything like finger tip moisture and general air.
I looked at it closely and realised that if you rub hard with a cloth you can remove most of this film where the eye of the lense is.
now i have clear photos with a cap still on my case

the desire is a very good phone, i would still have it over any other device currently and the video is easily sufficient if you use the correct settings.

I can back-up Rastaman's comments. The battery will easily do what you want, you will have to learn how to use the phone, though. Android is different to a lot of other phone OSs, it takes a bit of time to learn what drains the battery if you leave it resident (very few apps do this but one that does will kill the battery life). Once you've got used to it, though, it'll work fine. I get 24 hours from about 33% of the battery but I charge the phone in my car (I have a cradle so I can use it as a satnav so it's always charging). I don't have to plug it into the mains very often, only if I really cane it (4-5 hours solid gaming and/or web-browsing).

I will warn you, the battery takes a couple of weeks to condition, you will find it quite weak initially but it gets a lot better.

I've not used 720p but the hint I've seen is to select a different ISO setting (800 ?) as the default option has a bug which causes a bit of juddering.

can someone explain what this means? Im not sure how to change it. I tried my HD recording at the weekend and it was quite juddery

Open the camera app.
Hit Menu and select Photo.
Now select the bottom menu - settings (looks like a couple of cogs)
Hit ISO and select 800.

Now go back to the top menu and select Video
In the Settings menu select 720p and record away.

Thanks for that. Could you explain what ISO is and what i have just done? SOrry to be a pain. Also is there a fix for the flash? As mentioned before in low light the flash is too powerful and just makes faces look white

iso is the speed of capture. 800 is a fast capture rate but the trade off is that it doesnt have enough time to deal with all colours/saturations at low light limit so you loose out on quality in images. its suggested to change it back to auto for images

video however is a constant frame capture rate and needs to be as fast as possible. 800 is ideal for this

Yes, unfortunately it doesn't adjust the output level of the flash, just the exposure time. Having said that, there are very few phones that have good camera quality in low light or with the flash. But that's ok because if I want to take serious photos, I have a DSLR for that. Even a small P&S camera is much better than any phone. The camera is really there for snaps and simple photos. Granted phones have improved a lot over the years, but there's still a long way to go before we can start leaving our real cameras in the cabinet at home.

I use ISO 400 and leave it there for both video and camera. It's fast enough for video and medium light, with more acceptable levels of image grain. I find 800 is too grainy for photos, but 400 is a decent compromise. If video is more important than photos, then set it at 800 though.

I have the same opinion about video on phones, it's not even close to having a proper video camera with image stabilization, optical zoom, etc. But again, at least things are improving in that area too.

I disagree with the first poster also. Having extensively used both my desire and an iphone 4 I really do think the difference is minimal. Sure, it's no Flip Mino HD or anything, but it is only a phone. If quality is key then stay away (but others aren't much better). The quality is perfectly acceptable. Plus look at the competition for starters.

On average my phone lasts the whole day, from 8am when it gets off charge till around 11pm when it starts flashing battery low. I send about 300 texts the odd 3-4 calls. Tweeting aswel so 3g is on every hour or so. I hardly take pictures but Im always using it and my battery lasts enough during the day. I never carry a charger but otherwise get the desire its awesome

It has a few flaws like but otherwise all in all its a good phone. The cover covering the camera is a par but once you have the Desire, you will love it.
