This is probably a stupid question, and I may get flamed for it...but as someone who loves gadgets, but isn't necessarily the most techie person out there when it comes to understanding the lingo and what not, I need to ask...why should I root my Evo? I've done a number of google searches and read a number of articles, but I'm still curious as to how beneficial this is and how big of a risk it is. Can someone please explain this to me in plain, simple to understand English?

Wow, thanks guys! I appreciate the information...

My next question would be, which method would you recommend? I'd like the simplest and most risk-free method (of course)...looks like there are a ton of different ways to do it out there. This is all very intimidating but I'm ready to take the plunge...the battery life is what sold me, I'm so tired of having to charge my phone twice a day. :(

as a noob myself(3 days ago i had no idea how to go about rooting and all) i would recommend going the UNrevoked way. It honestly took less than 5 minutes of "work" and worked flawlessly. I also decided not to flash a new ROM but instead just flashed Netarchys newest kernel. Downloaded awesome apps like SetCPU, RomManager, Titanium Backup, and Autostarts....and now i can't believe how longer my battery seems to last than weeks past. I had a 3 hour night class last night and i spend a good amount of time on my EVO as you'd imagine. In that 3 hours of moderate to heavy use my batt went from 76% to 66%. I can also say that now the battery doesnt get drained so much when in standby either(pretty much the reason i did all this).
