I tried installing the Droid X keyboard by installing the .apk, but read that you had to flash a .zip through CWM (adrenalyne posted this information and the zip over at xda)(the keyboard FC's if you install the apk). I cleared my devlik cache and installed the .zip via clockwork, but I'm still getting FC's. Anyone have a solution?

hmmm, i had no prob installing it...try running fix permissions in clockwork or rom manager and see if that helps...or maybe redownloading it, could have been a corrupt d/l?

No I'm almost positive that's not it, as I'm getting a common error that I've seen people getting on xda but no one answers their questions. or mine (i posted in "general" and "themes" on xda but no one has said anything).

The error states that the keyboard must force close due to something about latin? not sure if its related to latinIME or what

If anyone could help that'd be great. TIA

If anyone has run into this problem, please let me know. I'll post the answer here if someone requests it

How do you install it? I have the same .apk that i used on my Incredible, i liked this keyboard and I want to get it installed on my Fascinate. When I run the DroidXKeyboard.apk file i get a "Parse Error" "There is a problem parsing the package"

dont use the apk from your incredible, the dxkb is modded from phone to phone....use this one from xda modded for the sf

i suppose if you have clockwork and no root you can flash it yes. I was under the impression to have clockwork you needed root.

Well I really want to root the phone because I experience a lot of lag, especially when switching between apps, last time i was using Slacker and Google Maps when I pulled down the notification menu it took forever to display it and select the Google maps (while in Slacker). I've never experienced such a slow response in a device like this one. I really like this phone but I'm afraid if I root the phone I won't be able to return it (still in the 30 days) in case I change my mind. Plus, not to mention I want to get the 2.2 (if and when it ever arrives) on my phone via OTA, not sure if doing root would prevent me from doing so.

i believe in the root section someone posted yesterday how to remove root with adb. I agree that the lag sucks, thats why so many of us here love voodoo so much. I knew about the lag before getting the phone but I had no intention of staying stock when I jumped over here.

As for the ota root alone shouldnt stop it from coming through as long as you have all the original apps. I mean nothing is ever 100% when it comes to root and otas, but thats what has happened on other devices. Personally, I never grab the otas unless someone has a new root method lined up already. Usually later that same day or within the next few one of the amazing devs will have either a root method or will root, deodex, and drop an update.zip in rom manager or on xda.

Even on perfectly stock devices otas (see the droid x, droid1 fiasco) can brick the device. Most times thats not the case but I prefer rooted 2.1.1 to 2.2 any day so otas are the 1 thing I hold back on doing. Normally I dive in head first to leaks, kernels, etc

Well I don't think I can sit here and wait while dealing with this awful lag, so I'm going to take the bait and just root this thing. I'm not sure I understand the whole voodoo thing, I had rooted my Incredible then unrooted when the OTA came out, so you notice a significant difference in performance once rooted? Quadrant gives me a score about about 800 (kind of sad).

quadrant scores arent everything but non-oced voodoo will run in 1700s and 1.2 oc around 2000.

my suggestion is "go slowly" as rushing in will lead to new membership in the

http://androidforums.com/fascinate-all-things-root/203203-i-borked-my-sf-support-group-thread.html

get root and clockwork sorted out and read all the voodoo faqs and guides at xda and warnings. If you go ahead with voodoo, I would really suggest using the non-oced one to start with and run that for a day or two and see how that works for you.

if you do run into issues just take a step back and know that almost all of us have been there with this phone and it can be brought back to life.

I will also say, make sure you have the android sdk installed, the samsung drivers installed, and have made sure adb will recognize your phone. You ll need adb to restore a really borked sf.

Well, I'm wondering what's the best keyboard to go with overall. I like swipe when I'm forced to use the phone one-handed, but when I start typing two-handed style, it really screws up big time and starts typing gobbledeegook. I move my fingers fast enough it has to support multitouch. I like being able to long-hold on a letter and have the accented characters (I speak more than one language and sometimes have to text not in English) or special characters. Any recommendations?

i use the dx keyboard most of the time and only swype when i plan on texting a lot. Slideit in the market is great (although a pricey 8 bucks) because its basically swype but you can turn of the slide and use it as a regular qwerty (minus multitouch.)

I would recommend using the DX keyboard, i used this a lot on my Incredible, i love the ability to easily switch language, plus it had the mic button which would work flawlessly (in whatever language) and it was easy to switch between language by swiping the space bar, unfortunately, the standard keyboard doesn't have the capability of switching language, and swype can be a pain sometimes when it won't recognize the word you have to type it in manually and you get this pop-up screen while you type, its okay, but i find myself doing this far too often. In either case, my main concern is the ability to switch language as you can see, hopefully that helps. I still need to try and root my phone so I can install the DX keyboard for my new Fascinate.

Well hopefully you can answer this for me, I want to root my phone for 3 reasons (hopefully root can do this), whats the best route to take to address these issues:

1) Install DX keyboard
2) remove lag
3) remove Bing

Thanks,

Thanks,

We can certainly help you here! With a working recovery image that can be flashed through Odin (both of which are free, btw) resurrecting this phone is not only possible, but something I've done more than once, on more than one fascinate. (Sadly, I bricked my sister's phone shortly after rooting it, before trying any custom kernels or anything, either.)

As for the keyboard, I believe you have to install it via clockwork if you don't want force closes, so that would have to come after rooting, of course. Here's the most successful order of business that I have used in tweaking and customizing my phones. It is a very safe way to do it, in my opinion, and many are finding success with this method, not just me.

1. Purchase Fascinate (thx, cpt. obvious...)
2. Get it rolling with your google account (you can bypass this for now if you want to do it later, but you'll need it for market access.)
3. Enable USB debugging and follow the one click root process HERE.
4. If that doesn't work, let me know and I or someone else here will point you in the direction of the command method (which you can actually use with the files you download for the linked method above!)
5. After rooting, I install my purchased copy of Launcher Pro Plus. This alone with make the phone feel snappier and much more responsive, not to mention it will give you a completely customizable interface to make your phone the way YOU want it to be. It's fast and clean. You only have to buy it if you want their nifty widgets and the resizable feature.
6. Next, I install root explorer (another app worth every penny). This accomplishes two important tasks for you in a fairly non-invasive way. It quickly and painfully verifies if your root was successful or not. You'll get a message saying the one click way was a success when it's done, but you never know until root explorer or another root-requiring program happily announces it has been granted superuser access. The second task this accomplishes is now you can go in and de-bloat and partially de-bing. I did both at the same time. Just don't use search or browser until you have a suitable replacement installed if you de-bloat and de-bing first!
7. Immediately after step 5, I installed Dolphin HD browser, then the google enhanced search APK file, then Google Navigator. When you try to search, open a browser, or navigate, set the default to all your no google goodies, and you're set.
8. After all that, I do the clockwork mod (requires Odin).
9. Download the battery percentage tool found here to your SD card. Battery % should be a stock displayed item on EVERY PHONE FOREVER. I don't know a more effective means of communicating how much battery you have left than simply stating a percentage. Our minds are incredibly accustomed to dealing with percentage figures every day! 10% off this!! 25% off that!!! May contain up to 10% ethanol!! 50% of self made millionaires are high school dropouts!! Etcetera!! Etcetera!! (/rant)
10. Next, download the ZIP you want to flash to your SD card.
11. Install ROM manager (free) and reboot into CW recovery
12. From there you can install your battery meter, your custom kernels, and then reboot your phone.
13. Install SetCPU (configure to whatever settings tinkle your chimes)
14. Install AutoKiller (makes other task managers look silly)

IMPORTANT: After each major change/installation, I would strongly recommend rebooting your phone, such as after launcher pro, or installing ROM manager or flashing the CWM. Verify that each change was done properly and is not locking up your phone before going on to the next, just to be on the safe side. Also, start with a milder kernel, possibly with stock speed and voltage. SetCPU will still save you some battery life because of its aggressive ability to scale down CPU speeds drastically upon your demand. I am running the D02 1100 LV kernel, and it is currently filling me with happiness and joy, but your phone might be different!

Hopefully that is helpful! :D

It would do it automatically depending on the language I was using, say spanish for example, it would automatically type in the word with the accent.

Hey, I posted just above for ya, and edited in an answer. I just made the post before you made yours, and edited after, so I am posting to make sure you see what I added, in case you need it. :)
