Help HTC Hero Touch Screen problems

Hi, just starting last night, I am having issues with the touch screen. I touch the notification bar, and it does not come down. I can select the button at the button, and then touch notifications and it will come down. Then while I am doing something, a few minutes later, the notification bar finally comes down. Sometimes when I click on the clock - the notification bar opens.... and my "p" will not work unless I tilt the phone sideways.

Also, it seems I have to press harder (not too hard of course) to bring up applications.

Whats going on? I hope someone can help me. I have already tried to reboot several times. I took the battery out for a few minutes even.

Sounds like you need to re-calibrate or reset calibration on your screen.

Settings > Locale & Text > Touch Input > Text Input
you'll find both things i'm talking about in there

If this does not help you are possibly having a problem with your screen. Just in case you didn't know these screens are only responsive to your skin or something that can pass a current. The screen is not pressure sensitive at all as far as I understand.

You should make sure that you have a process management app installed like 'advanced task killer' to quit background processes. The fact that HTC doesn't include a similar utility or even inform the user about this is a major usability problem. People like my parents would never figure out why their phone's performance is horrible.

I've had issues with my Hero's touch screen also. The screen occasionally will register every touch as a click, but when I am holding firmly and trying to drag. Restarting seems to fix, but is extremely annoying and is happening somewhat regularly. Another of many bugs...

Or not. Someone needs to check out the sticky at the top of the forum as well as the numerous other threads regarding this topic.

On a side note does anyone have any issues with the screen not being as responsive when it's cold?

No, not in my case. This weekend I had it with me on two bike rides in my back jersey pocket in a BodyGlove cell phone pouch. The temp was in the lower 20s both days and one ride was 1 1/2 hours long in that temp.
I was running the sportstrack app to track my ride. When I finished, pulled the Hero out of my jersey pocket, then out of of the pouch and was able to bring up the app and click 'finish' no problem (except my fingers were freezing cold!)
Came right inside and watched my tracked ride on google maps, selecting different things and the Hero didn't miss a beat. Long term or repeated exposure over time may have an affect perhaps.

Having similar issues.

Phone not responding. So laggy. Seems like I need to press hard or hold long.

I did the reset and all touch screen functions ceased to work.

PDF viewer was zooming in and out by itself. Can't zoom in on documents.

The next day screen started to intermittently work.

Later this evening. Started working better.

Now works...

Feels like a lemon... and cautious about it continuing to work...

@Mariio - that's normal - that's what it means to reset it back to factory defaults.

I'm posting brining this thread back from the dead because I'm having the exact same issue and am looking for some assistance from those who have gotten their phones fixed.

I'm rooted and have a custom ROM flashed.

I just got home from the local Sprint store and they gave me a line of BS about how they can't work on the screen because the phone software has been altered.

I find this incredibly annoying considering there is absolutely no link between A) the dust under the screen B) the touch screen going dead in parts and the software. If the entire screen would go dead, I could get it, but it still registers touch, but like others here, I have to press very firm and/or do a complete reboot in order to get it to work properly.

So my question is this: who has managed to get their phones fixed by Sprint? Did they state that it's a known issue? What exactly did they state as the known issue? Does anyone know about any documentation out there in the interwebz anywhere that might talk about this 'known issue'?

With cars, if you were to...say...put an exhaust on a car, then end up with electrical problems a year down the road, there are laws in place that prevent dealerships from claiming that they won't touch the car due to a voided warranty from the exhaust. Is there no such consumer protection in place in this instance?

Hi,

I found this thread through a google search because I was trying to troubleshoot screen problems on my hero. I noticed the comment that the screen is sensitive to electrical charges on your fingertips and remembered that I had been using superglue this afternoon and got some on my fingertip. Went back to the phone -- the screen worked just fine with my little finger, but not my index finger (the one that had glue on it).

Thanks for your info!!!

Hi All,

Looks like, I am not the only one facing this problem though quite new to it. It just started 3 days back and very annoying since then, phone works and not works. It doesnt recognize the touch location e.g. I touch in the middle of the screen and screen bottom buttons 'Applications-Phone' are clicked. I cant type properly. I had to press hard. Turning screen off and turning on sometimes helps but thats not valid all the times. Surely, it is the most annoying thing I am facing on it even worst than waiting for 2.1 upgrade..So far all the searches resulted in no solution :-( really looking forward to hear from you all.

Returning the phone is not an option. I didnt buy from Canada. I had it from mid-east and carrying it since last year so need to find a fix.

Thanks for helping. off course, there will be a solution. I trust so many genious brains out here ;-)

Do you have a SPRINT HTC Hero (CDMA)? Does your phone say Sprint on the front? You mention having bought the phone in the mid east, and not Canada...

We can get you the best help if we know exactly what phone you have. :)
