I searched for similar threads, so forgive me if I have missed one. Anyways.

I just downloaded "Lookout", after seeing it on a Verizon commercial (I believe a Droid 2 commercial). I tested out the GPS locator, as this is the only thing I will be using this program for, and it worked like a charm. Has anyone had trouble with this app? Any tricks or anything to this app? Just wanted to consult the community on this one I suppose a discussion thread in a sense.

I tried it while it was in my pocket and it located the phone a few blocks away at the railroad tracks, I'm not sure if you have to always have your GPS on as that would drain your battery but if I know a general area where it is I will use it to locate it with the siren feature.

I leave my GPS option on, I understood that it does not use the GPS unless it is needed. I figure its another layer of protection, even if it costs some battery. *Poor recent college graduate that cannot afford another Incredible*

Well now I'm going to leave GPS on as well, Maybe it was draining fast in my imagination.

Whenever the little satellite emblem is showing on the upper bar, that is the only time it is actually activated. I have tested it both ways a few times and have not noticed a difference with battery drain (minus whenever using the actual GPS features).

Well I use juice defender and that could be a problem seeing as how lookout was unable to locate my phone or make it scream with that enabled then when I woke up my screen It was able to receive a scream alert and be loacated.

I've had it on my mytouch since I bought it. It was called Checkpoint I think when I first got it. It's changed names once or twice. Seems to work well I guess. I've never tried locating the phone or making it scream. Always wondered what the scream thing would do

Hmm that's odd. I was searching for it which is how I came across this thread. Other people have said the scream thing works as it's suppose to and turned the volume back up. I did read the gps was off

Does it drain your battery? I'd be ok with losing some battery life, say 5-10%, but if it is a battery hog I'm going to skip it.

I used Lookout for a long time. Now I use only the anti-virus option.

Download Tasker and follow this guide: Locatephone - Tasker Wiki

Basically when any number texts the passphrase you specify the phone will turn on GPS silently, wait the given amount of time (i set 1-2 min for good gps lock), grab the location & return to send saying "Here I am! + LocationURL"

IncDoes Z & HD port both use it. Works fine but its not immediate, takes 10-20 minutes to start. Same with the remote lock, which is awesome by the way since you can post a message.

I love LookOuts siren, but again, I mimicked it in Tasker and I believe you can do the same with Tasker.

Also my new fav ROM (feather v1.7) is starting to fuse HTChub into it for 2.0 release.

I used Lookout when I 1st got my phone back in April... It was always actively running in the background and drained my battery. Not sure if it's still a battery hog, with software updates etc.

I had problems with Lookout correctly locating my phone via GPS as well. Mobile defense is spot on. Gives me the exact address and everything. Anyone tried Wavesecure now that it's getting bought out by McAfee? Curious as to how good that one is and how well the GPS, lock up, and phone backup/wipe work. Unfortunately Mobile Defense still doesn't have the wipe/back up feature and would like to have it in case of an emergency.

+1 for Tasker. You can get it cheaper if you buy directly from the developer instead of going through the market.... It's cheaper for you AND the dev makes more money since the Market isn't taking a cut.

I have both a silent track-my-phone Profile that I can use if I ever suspect my phone's been stolen and a make-a-lot-of-noise Profile that I can use if I just need help finding my phone.

The silent one:

• Turns on GPS
• Turns on WiFi
• Waits a minute for a good GPS Lock
• Grabs my location
• Looks up my location on Google Maps
• Creates a short URL via is.gd
• Sends a text to my secondary Google Voice phone number (so it isn't sent back to my Incredible) that includes:
  • Date
  • Time
  • URL of location on Google Maps
  • GPS Coordinates
  • % of battery left
• Turns off GPS
• Turns off WiFi

My noisy one:

• Turns of the volume
• Cranks up the brightness
• Plays a really loud and annoying submarine dive alarm
• Displays a pop up message that says "Help! I have either been misplaced or stolen. If you find me, please contact John at ...."

And for good measure, the noisy one also does everything in the silent profile does.

There's a bit of a learning curve with Tasker if you want to make your own, but there are tons of pre-built things in the wiki, many of which you can just download and plug in.

Anyone compared this product to "Where's My Droid"? I have been using WMD without any problems. Only uses the GPS when it needs it.

I uninstalled Where's My Droid after I started using Tasker for this, but last time I looked at WMD it was unable to turn on GPS, so if it ever gets turned off you're screwed.

So the Verizon Droid commercial made me curious about this app. I decided to download it, and give it a try. I came across one major flaw though, and I'm wondering if it's just my own stupidity. There is a huge green icon on the bar at the top (sorry, only had android two days now, not familiar with all the technical terms) letting anyone who obtains your phone realize, within a few minutes, that you're running this software. They could then just uninstall it at this point making the point of the software useless. Is there a way to get rid of the green shield icon telling me the status of the phone?

well you phone needs to have password lock on it to begin with really for ANY software to be useful. Otherwise they can open up the programs list, scan thru and just delete the any software immediately.
