Droid X ( new buyer )

I'm looking into getting a new Droid, and I'm thinking the X due to it's size. I'm 6'5 and my hands are huge, so the X actually is a godsend for me.

How do you like it? Is it worth it? One of the better ones on the market?

Thanks, the phone I'm getting away from is the original BB Storm 1, so I really only know terrible OS systems from RIM.

It's the unofficial best Verizon currently has to offer. Go for it, you will not be disappointed.

I haven't touched a better phone.

If you want a safe little world with no pointy objects and where every corner is rounded off so you don't hurt anything or yourself, the iPhone 4 is a great device.

If you need a Blackberry, the Torch is pretty good.

For Android phones, it's probably a toss-up between the DX and the Galaxy S-variants. There are plusses and minuses to both, but for me the DX is definitely a better choice. Prefer the LCD to the SAMOLED, prefer the soft-touch plastic/metal body to the hard glossy plastic, prefer the hard buttons to the soft buttons, and the GPS/radios are better on the DX.

Well, I'm pretty much looking at the X at this point. Iphone is out of the question because I'm not leaving Verizon, as it's the best carrier in my area and where I live(Pittsburgh and surrounding areas).

I'm solely based on the Droid X because to me it looks pretty incredible, plus it's bigger, and I like that.

In terms of speed and all that, I've read the reviews, but how do the customers hold to it? Is it fast?

Does it also recognize wifi too?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but these are questions that can easily be answered by simply sitting down and reading a couple of reviews on this phone (available on hundreds of different websites). I know that you said you already read a review or two, but the fact that you asked if the phone has Wi-Fi tells us that you have a lot of closer reading to do before you should be asking questions - simply because general knowledge goes a long way, especially in a forum like this one.

IMO best smartphone on the market. I have average hands and have no problem holding it. I usually hold it in the palm of my hand and use my thumb to navigate the screens. If I turn it to land scape I have both hands at the end and use my thumbs as well. It actually feels very natural now. I will not be able to go back to a smaller screen, so until the create the X2 (not the stupid looking silver one) this is my phone.

Seed is great even running everything stock. You can make it faster if you want by making some tweaks. My phone is flying right now. It responds as fast as I can touch it. I have had no problem picking up Wifi or sending Wifi on my phone. I normally don't switch to WiFi because my X with 3G is faster than DSL at my house.

Also, please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm looking purely on user based experiences. It's easy to review a phone and be done with it. A lot of the sites I've read, TechCrunch, Engadget, use the phone for a small sample size. Which is why I'm purely asking the user.

As for WiFi, I may have misunderstood the explanation regarding what I was asking about. I understood that you can tether it to be wifi access, not simply just a wifi receiver as well.

That's all. I just want to hear what everyone else says about it, questions and concerns wise.

I bought the X because I think it's the best currently available.

I wanted a phone that could go the whole day on a charge. In real world use I've found this to be realistic. And, given how much I've been playing with this thing on a daily basis, I'm surprised at how well it's been doing in this regard.

I wanted a phone that had good reception, good mic, speakerphone and earpiece sound quality. I'm very happy with all of these aspects of the phone.

I wanted a phone with good build quality. The phone feels very solid to me. I'm very pleased with it's build quality.

I wanted a phone with stable software and hardware. I'm coming from windows mobile and while I liked my sprint diamond it had more then it's share of software glitches. So far I've found the X to be very stable with a few minor issues popping up in non-critical areas (the battery detailed stats force closing comes to mind).

Couple things I'm not that thrilled about:

I'm dissappointed in the picture quality from the camera... which bothers me since the video is surprisingly good. I don't understand how video can be of better quality then still shots.

The stock launcher is just OK. I've switched to launcher pro plus along with a couple sense-like widgets.

I looked at the Incredible, the fascinate and the Evo. The flaky GPS and just average sound quality and reception of the fascinate ruled it out... loved the form factor and the screen though. I was concerned about the Evo's battery life. The incredible was my second choice but the battery life, sound quality/reception of the X won me over.

I'm 6'2 and have hands of a person 6'5". The phone is extremely comfortable with persons with large hands.
I came from a Storm myself. While I wouldn't say I had any problems using the Storm, this is certainly better.....especially because of SWYPE!

I was on the fence for quite a long time between the Droid X and the Samsung Fascinate. The Incredible was too small for me, and I had heard way too many horror stories about the poor battery life. After the Fascinate finally came out and I was able to get a lot of hands-on experience of my own with friends owning one, and reading a lot of things on these forums and others, I sided with the X and couldn't be happier. At first I wasn't too sure about the hump on the phone or the locked bootloader (since I did have hopes of doing quite a bit with my phone), but it's been pleasant to find that neither are a hindrance in the least bit. Instead of playing the lottery with the Fascinate of getting a phone that won't have poor mic feedback, bad call quality, or a broken GPS at some varying degree.. I decided on the X, a phone that has a much, much higher probability of being solid straight of the box.

Now, the first thing you'll want to do is grab Launcher Pro (and perhaps the plus; it's well worth it) or ADW. They look better, offer more, and are smoother with going between the screens compared to the stock MotoBlur launcher. Beyond that, there's plenty of threads here to read up to find great apps that many find useful, how to root your phone and the great advantages it provides, and how you can customize the phone to look the way you want it to.

I love my Droid X, but to be honest the 2 things I don't like (compared with other Android phones are):

1. No front facing camera... sort of kills videoconferencing with apps like Fring... and Google Video is coming soon in Android 3.0/Gingerbread...

2. I'm not really a fan of the hard front buttons and would prefer buttons like the HTC Evo 4G... but I don't want Sprint...

Other than that I'm pretty happy!

Wasnt a good fan of the front buttons either but i got use to it, not a big deal, haven't Root yet, is working just perfect for me, then again I just love this phone

When I use Google Nav it isn't choppy at all. That little arrow moves smoothly and is extremely accurate.
