Apparently opera mobile is to be released on android this month but I don't get it so could some kind person explain.

Opera mobile will render pages over the internet rather than from their servers like opera mini. So what I don't get is what is the advantage of opera mobile as data won't be compressed. They have also chosen to use the same fugly ui as opera mini although added pinch to zoom, although not sure if automatic text reflow will happen.

Without data compression what advantage will there be, can someone in the know explain as I don't get it.

Thanks....

It's not about the advantages really. It's just another browser choice. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the stock htc / android browser. However, just look at how popular the Dolphin HD browser is on the market. Likewise, opera mobile on the iPhone was a huge success and yet it didn't really bring anything new to the phone or anything that safari couldn't do.

Furthermore, look at desktops. Despite internet explorer being absolutely awful in every way, its still the most popular browser by far. Firefox, safari, opera and chrome aren't that different from one another really other than UI. Many people may prefer the UI of opera mobile to the stock android browser. It's just choice.

And, according to their website they haven't announced any of its features yet except pinch to zoom. So for all we know it could have some amazing features that will make us all download it. Or a new rendering method so it loads full pages quicker than others. Could happen...

Hi,

I'm using opera mini 5. Its been out for a while.

I don't have all the techno babble but its one of the fastest browsers I've tested for a gsm connection.

I live on a hill in the country and I'm only able to receive gsm there. On this connection its a brilliant browser that I can recommend.

Edit! oops, just realised your talking about opera mobile, not mini. Sorry!

If opera mobile is anywhere as good as opera mini on a gsm connection then I'm looking forward to it.

Not only have you completely missed the OP's point, but you have completely misunderstood the two browsers. The whole point of opera mini is that it compresses the data using opera's servers making it much faster. Opera mobile won't compress the data. The OP's question was - what is the point in opera mobile if it doesn't compress data. Why not just use the stock or htc one / others etc....

True, and thanks!

Exactly, I do see the point of opera mini as it data compress. But opera mobile will look the same but not have the data compression advantage. I do use opera mini when using a data connection to save data charges and stock for wifi.

I was only wondering if I was missing some great advantage with opera mobile that made it worth it over stock.

Thanks for all the replies :)

Opera mini is a bit lame, it does do the whole data-compression thing but it's not a very fully-featured browser (it's made for dumb-phones to give them a "proper" browser they can actually use). It's small and light but also ham-strung because of this.

Opera mobile is like full Opera for smart-phones. Previous versions for Android have been a bit poor but I think Opera have realised the number of Android users there now are and decided to implement it properly on Android.

Opera mobile can use either full web or compressed (I'm kinda hoping they'll allow it to switch based-on the network connection but I suspect not) and it's a more standards-compliant browser than stock (or, I suspect, Dolphin) which means it should see the web rendered better (YMMV).

Asking what the point of it is is a bit like asking why Opera/Firefox rather than IE and if you're asking that I'm afraid there is no helping you...

I love Opera on desktops, I really miss gestures when I have to use other browsers. I tried Opera on Android and it was terrible. Pinch-zoom and the other enhancements will make me try it again.

Where did you get previous versions of Opera Mobile for android?

I personally love Opera and can't wait for the Opera Mobile for Android. Really like the UI and it automatically syncs all my bookmarks speed dial with my desktop. Also think the tab switching is the best of any browser.

Previous version was Opera mini (and was on the market)

Ah right, thought you had a previous version of Opera Mobile.

Opera Mobile will be a lot like Dolphin HD (which is basically like Firefox but for mobiles) in the way it will now use add-ons and pinch-to-zoom. Plus it is utilising HTML5 so should render a faster/fuller browsing experience. I also read it will support adobe air which will also help speed things up.

I have a love hate with Opera mini. I love it on symbian, hate it on android!

The one thing I miss from my Nokia Symbian days is Opera Mobile.

Tried Dolphin HD and found it clunky, so stuck with the standard HTC browser. Once Opera mobile 11 lands, I may find myself switching.

Hopefully they've included the feature to import settings from the old browser to Opera like it did on my Nokia.
