Yes they could, but that only addresses the medical research aspect. A major part of this (and other similar projects) is related research, whether in computer science, mathematics, electronic engineering or GGPU programming. That's "added-value" both to Stanford and to the wider scientific community.

Besides, as a fully paid-up member of Geeks Anonymous I find it fun.

I also am not sure that if everyone who was participating donated the equivalence in money to the cause that the same number of work units would be processed because a lot of that would have to go into overhead like administering the computers that would need to be added and powering them.

Maybe I should use research as an excuse to hook up a power monitor to the PS3 and see how much it costs to do that vs using a GPU. (I find it odd that he worries about something happening to my PS3 for running so long yet thinks nothing of putting my computer in the same situation which after adding that Radeon HD5770 pushed it to the point where it cost me more than the PS3.)

I am guessing it will just automatically add me to the team list after I enter the right team number and my name? I used to have 2x 4850s in this machine but now I just have the one (moved the other to another machine). This rig has a Core i7 920, 6GB DDR3 Tri-Channel, RAM 1333MHz, not much else is important I suppose. Uh, it doesn't use hardly any bandwidth sending it in right? Also, if I use my PS3 as well with the same name and what not, it will just combine both in points right?

Not much at all, no. It depends on the size of the WUs you're working on, but the GPU2 packets my 5850 returns are approx 256Kb in size and take 5-6s to upload.

Correct. So long as you configure the same username and team id for all clients your total will be aggregated.

Yup, stats update hourly on the hour I believe but the page can be 'locked' for some time as this occurs. Depending on when your completed WUs are received it can take two updates for them to show.

my laptop which is a core 2 duo with 4 gigs of ram,
2 old intel pentium 4 HT PC's
and my old AMD build amdx2 5000 black edition, with a 8600 card.

figure if theyre just sitting there running doing nothing anyways why not
