Evo slower than aircard

I'm currently testing weather I want to drop my aircard for the EVO, but I'm noticing the speeds and ping times are lower on the EVO.

Same network, same time, same location , same speed test (speedtest.net), different devices.

Is there some throttling going on? I've cracked 1mb only twice on the evo while the aircard has done it nearly every time i've checked in the last two years.

pingtimes are horrible in the 300's while my aircard is at 117 or so usually. This is a killer for my ps3 gaming. Or could this just be the fact on the evo app we can't pic the servers and maybe its using a bad one or its far away.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved before my 30 days are up. More money for slower speeds? I like new stuff but carrying around a phone isn't worth losing netflix and ps3 gaming.

I think part of the problem is the usb device is all modem which the evo is all beast.
Sorry if your disappointed-to be honest I can't even get 4g at my house with the evo but I can with the modem.

So what are you going to do? Stick with your modem and get 4g or return the evo? Keeping both seems crazy.

I thought it might be the power. The cradlepoint router that holds the aircard is linked to the surge protector my computer is. and the evo is plugged into the pc USB so they're all sharing the power from the same outlet. The evo isn't getting less power is it? that might be it? I'll try plugging it into a wall with good reception later.

Just wondering because I have a Cradlepoint and It offers a better range than the wifi hotspot option in the phone. Has anyone tethered the EVO with the Cradlepoint? Specifically I have the CTR-350, I have full bars in my house on the 4G network but I am unable to run computers in different rooms at full speed because of weak connections! Please let me know if there is a tethering software I need to purchase...or maybe one that's free that you know will work in this scenario!?

I tried plugging it into my cradlepoint and it didn't work.

Too bad it would be nice to have the Ethernet cable connected to the phone cause I dont think you can tether and use the hotspot at the same time. Atleast yesterday i tried to turn on hotspot while connected to the PC and it wouldn't let me. This means i gotta D/C the phone from my PC to use it anywhere else until i get a wifi card for the desktop

It does depend on the area you are in. I get like 1.8mb and 160ms ping times at my work and like 1mb and 300ms ping times at home.

There is no throttling going on. As far as I have heard is we get faster speeds since we pay the extra $10 a month. With my old mogul, in the same spot gets like 50% to 70% the speed of my EVO.

I installed unrevoked & wifi tether, & it sure seems a lot faster than the hot spot. In fact,
i cancelled the hot spot & my air card last night. I also had pdanet from the market & it was slower than the hot spot. I haven't actually done a speed test, i'm just goin by how fast websites download & how smooth videos play.

Clear is Sprint 4G. Exact same network/towers. If you have a clear modem that gets 4G in your home and the phone won't then the phone is probably a dud. In the places I get 4G I get 2-4.5mbps. I break 1mbps with 3G.

I keep having 2 re-connect & when I am online, I get error msgs saying it cannot display webpge. Alredy attempted some trblshooting but still having lots of issues. VERY disappointing!!! :-(

After much trial and tribulation, I was able to cancel my Comcast internet connection in favor of the Evo's tethered 4G connection. I have read your posts of today and this one, and from the sounds of them, you have already decided to call it quits with Sprint and the Evo. I can assure you that you are not experiencing any problems that cannot be overcome.

If you would like, I will be happy to walk you through real solutions for the problems you are having. Sprint's Technical support team is ill informed and generally not capable of more than the most rudimentary of troubleshooting suggestions.

Well, isn't this a fun topic, but it's hardly new... Cell phones have always had slower connections for their data connections than modem/aircards directly. With 4G in particular, it's been pretty well documented that standalone modems/aircards are much faster than tethering any device - and the reason behind it is very simple - Background Tasks... I use a few "simple" numbers below to give you a rough idea on how the system would work.

Your modem/aircard is accessing the full speed of the network via USB port. There's no background tasking taking over bandwidth. So, if you are on a 6Mbps connection, your aircard is able to use the entire 6Mbps for an up and downlink (more than likely 4 up and 1 down with a buffer.)

The EVO/Epic or another 3G connected device is constantly running it's own data through the device as well as the 'data connection' for the PC. So with the same 6Mbps connection, you will likely have 1-2Mbps tied up with on-device applications, 2-3Mbps down and 1Mbps up... 3G is the same story, but with much lower numbers in the connection department.

Another thing to look at is the actual speed your connection is running. Try running speakeasy.net/speedtest instead of speedtest.net as speedtest.net has had some major issues with servers and lag time between tests. Speakeasy's testing system is much more accurate over multiple tests.

Also, you can't use your Android apps to run the test on the phone, then use the browser to run the test on the wifi - you need to run the test on the Evo's browser using flash to make it an accurate result.

Good luck on beating the system and trying to find a faster connection, but you really can't use any of the devices for gaming under the TOS anyways, so be careful please!

A week after I got my EVO I canciled my 3g sprint card service and started using my EVO as my wierless card. If you can get a 4g signal than the wireless hotspot works great, it is very fast. The hotspot on 3g sucks ass, but if you download easyteather free ver. from the market than connect your data cable, choose teathering option. Doing this I could not tell a difference in speed between my sprint 3g card and my EVO connected with the data cable on 3g. Will work great this way. Only bad thing is you have to connect your EVO by the cable to your comp. in a 3g area.

So, it looks like you are right. The wifi tether app definitely seems to be limiting speeds
