Root NEW GUY. what is rooting please?

couldnt find a thread on basic rooting. What the heck is it?? please for me who is new to the xperia x10 but not that new to android. Only heard of this root game a few days ago but cant find info on what it does and why its better? please use simple terms lol

Rooting gives you root access to your X10. Simply like having an administrator account in windows.

Also, you can get all the great apps that are limited to root phones only

Basically it gives you access to everything, allowing you to do almost anything. What you can do depends, obviously, on your technical abilities.

Not if you use an app to root, but if you root using the old method you will, as you need to flash the phone.

I am new to this too. I found a link to Universal Androot and it says its good for our phone too. Anyone know how you can use it? My phone says that there is a block placed on the phone so I can't install the app. Here is the link. LMK what you guys think? If you use an app you won't flash the phone, so all apps and everything else is safe. Use the old method then you will flash the phone, i.e, lose everything on it.

well I did as you said, but the app gets blocked. "for security you phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market"

i still dont think i need to root my phone. Im not that into it. I like a nice phone but im not super techy and really need it. i like the 5 home pages thing but i can wait till 2.1 comes out for that. and for all i know, i rooting wont be a huge change for me. maybe i dont know too well the benifits of rooting then?

As that is an app, no, you won't lose all your data, but obviously back up your phone anyway.

Yeah that doesnt work. I just got my phone like 2 weeks ago and it does not have "unknown sources" in the directory. It was probably hidden by SE. All I get is "Manage applications" and "Development". I do appreciate the help though.

AT&T locks down a lot of the app loading possibilities for the X10. There is a sideloader that will let you install some of the extras you may want to try.

The HTC keyboard thread is a great start to seeing how to customize your phone & what is needed to get around the AT&T locks.

I plan on waiting for 2.1 also before trying to root my phone.

You'll only get that if you debrand.

oh, ok. I did achieve Root at least. I do get the super user icon in my app area to run some things. Got Titanium Backup, Root Explorer and some others. I DL'ed a torrent with 3000 apps, games and ringtones. Tons of stuff in there. LOL

This forum is a "must" for all xperia/adroid users. My hat goes off to all of you!!!!!

One question on this though, I installed .apk file on my phone (i now have the superuser & X10 root icons). Now what??? I wish to install some new fonts i picked up on this forum, but have no idea how to do so. Thanks.
