Help Yahoo Mail Mandatory Update?

Anyone use Yahoo Mail's app today?

I was just hit with a message that says,

"In Order to continue using this app, you must download to version 1.2 of this app in order to continue"
then I have 'Install' and "Exit".

Is this common or a possible virus/bug?

New to Android here.
Thanks!

Yes, I just got this today as well. Yahoo Mail is still in the Android Market, version 1.0.4, so I am suspicious of this version 1.2 "update", something isn't right here...

The only way to fix this error message is to download (if you don't have it already) the Yahoo Messenger app and do the following:

1) Tap the Yahoo Mesenger app
2) If you have email it will notify you top left, tap it
3) It will get you into the Yahoo mail app

Don't ask me how or why this works but it does. I was on the phone with AT&T tech support (I have the Samsung Galaxy S/Captivate) and I fixed it myself.

Hope this helps.

I have the Yahoo Mail App on the Droid Incredible and I'm am getting the same thing. Is it safe to download? I clicked the download by accident and it was downloading from a weird ftp and not yahoo it seemed like.

No. As I stated above, if you haven't downloaded the Yahoo Messenger app, download it. If you get into the Yahoo Messenger app and then click your emails on the top left/drag down .. you will be able to get into Yahoo Mail app and the error message will go away. It worked for me.

Well what exactly is this mandatory update then and should we be worried?

I just got this too. I tried searching for the download domain in association with Yahoo mail and didn't find anything. So for now I'll be leaving this alone. I tried deleting and reinstalling Yahoo Mail off the marketplace and got 1.0.4 again. Given that it isn't replaced there I will not be installing 1.2.0 from a third party site.

If this is real then it's amateur night at Yahoo, I guess this the ongoing effect of their association with MS ;-)

To be honest, I don't know what this is all about. When I called AT&T, they advised me they knew of this message but did not have anything to report. Originally they advised me to contact Samsung, but like I said I fixed it myself and didn't need to call Samsung.

Try what I stated above and if it works--great. If not, call your wireless carrier.

Regarding if its important, from what I've been advised and based on my own research the Android OS is pretty secure. Being that a lot of us are getting this, it could be a simple programming glitch and not a virus or whatever.

Appears to be associated with Yahoo. Located the zenfs.com domain in several blackberry forum posts regarding Yahoo applications (finance mostly).

A whois lookup reveals the following:

Looks to be legit, but my guess is that it wasn't supposed to be released in this way. I was unable to find any reference to the file name mail_4076.apk or a planned upgrade. Plus i'm sure they would have pushed it out the traditional market push.

Regards,

DaveX

I figured seeing as the domain was associated with Yahoo I would give it a try. I downloaded the .apk and it is a new version of the mail app (1.2.0). Seems to work good on my HTC Incredible. Has some UI updates, some new icons, and the ability to have multiple accounts. Might have been pushed by accident. I sent an e-mail to yahoo support just to verify that it is legit, but it looks like a legitimate update and doesn't seem like there is a reason or need to be alarmed.

Hey .. can you get a picture of it and post it, please? I'm curious to know what it looks like :)

FINALLLYYYY!!!!!

When you enter an email and press the menu button there is an option to select text now. That must be added in the 1.2 update. My gf's fascinate doesn't have that option.

I wonder when it will be available for my phone. I have the Samsung Captivate (aka Galaxy S) with AT&T. Right now I'm being informed this is not an AT&T approved file and thus is blocked. I haven't and don't want to root my phone so I'm stuck until it's "official" or put on the app market I guess :(

I'm not rooted either. In fact I just bought the Droid X 45 minutes ago and it came up when I was loading my apps back in.

It didn't work on my Droid X. I got the same mandatory message. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

The uninstall and reinstall suggestion was for the person whose app kept crashing.

To fix the quirk with the "mandatory update," you have to tap the Yahoo Messenger app, let it notify you of new mail, tap the mail on the top left, and it will open the yahoo mail app. You can open and close the yahoo mail app from then on with no error message. That's how I fixed my "mandatory update." I didn't update but it allowed me to get in.
