Help New to Android,, just bought the Eris, how can I make it a hotspot?

I just bought an eris off ebay, i want to make it a hotspot so i can get online from my computer with it. I have no idea where to start I am not familiar with any of this sort of thing. PLEASE HELP. with eay understandable words =)

if i dont root and use the other methods i can connect using m computer but can I be on it for a while? I am looking to eliminate my internet bill and just use my phones.

Just download PDAnet from the market and plug the phone into your computer for tethering. That way you keep the battery charged at the same time. WiFi hotspot will only chew the battery. If you root, save the wifi hotspot for when you don't have a cable handy.

If you root you can also download wired tether which is also completely free. All you need are the drivers (which you install when you download HTC Sync).
