Random shutdown doesn't happen with TouchWiz

As many people have experienced random shutdowns, I too used to have them. Sometime everyday and few other times, more than once a day. I could not figure out why (and I don't know even now the real reason).

There are few apps that I run always like e-mail, facebook, launcherPro etc., And there are other apps I run only once in a while like browser. So there was no one app that I could pin point as the cause of this random shutdowns. So I decided to try one by one to see if I can figure out anything, if anything at all.

So about 10 days ago, I decided to switch back to TouchWiz UI from LauncherPro (free edition) and see if it make any difference. May be a coincidence, since that switch I have not seen the shotdown even once and everything seem to be working great.

I know, some people using TouchWiz also have reported random shutdowns. But I seem to be having favorable results by switching.

As I mentioned, I wanted turnoff apps one by one and see the difference. LauncherPro happened to be the first one I chose (randomly). I like LancherPro very much and want to go back it it but I will wait if
there is someone who can make similar switch and report if it made any difference?

Well, this is very interesting. I've been very careful not to point a finger at a particular app as a cause of random shutdowns (other than aggressive user settings within SetCPU), but you've served as a catalyst. Before I continue, let me say that I believe there is more than one culprit responsible for shutdowns and that most are caused by a non-app related issue(s).

I've had my third device for 2-1/2 months. No shutdowns whatsover...until I installed LauncherPro last week. Then they started. I removed LauncherPro and - back to normal. I hereby declare an official suspicion that LauncherPro is one of the causes of random shutdowns. Before you react, I understand that many use LauncherPro with no problems. Great. I'm not saying that the app itself is poorly coded, but rather offering that it may begin a chain reaction that causes random shutdowns in some devices. I have not taken this declaration lightly. I waited a long time before openly stating my theory. I hope it proves of interest, and will begin a separate thread as I believe it important enough to highlight the possible interrelationship in a thread title.

I'm not sure what the cause of the shutdowns is, but if removing launcherpro has seemed to work for you, and you still want to use launcherpro keep in mind the developer is currently rewriting the entire app. I believe the current version has a basis on another app. the dev decided it would be better if he rewrote it from the ground up for efficiency and better overall knowledge of the code. When this new version is released I'd considering trying it again.

I'm convinced that there's an internal tipping point at which fuller battery charges, LauncherPro, or both - plus an as yet to be determined "other" factor is causing the shutdowns. With some devices the tipping point is more robust. With others, well, you get the picture.

Fuller charges the cause? "Captivate Keep Alive" - free from Market.
LauncherPro the cause? Uninstall - don't simply exit it from Home Switcher.
Neither? Exchange the phone a.s.a.p.

I was reading this thread last night and because I have never experienced shutdowns I didn't pay much attention. Then this morning I got up for work and the phone was working fine with a full charge. On my way to work I checked my email once while stuck in traffic and all was good. Then I got to work a bit early and decided to check the new. The damn phone had shutdown and would not power back on! I had to remove the battery and then power it back on. It seems to be working fine now.

I had a 92% battery charge when the phone powered back on and I am running launcherpro.

With that said, I'm still within my 30 days, so should I exchange it for a new one?

Interesting scenario, and it all depends on how deep into your 30 days you are. If you have a bit of breathing room...

1. Uninstall LauncherPro
2. Try Captivate Keep Alive (free from the Market). I've communicated with the developer, and what the app basically does is to keep the CPU busy until a user-definable battery level is reached, say 80%. Once that happens the app stops what it was doing, the theory being that your high battery charge has something to do with the shutdowns.

If you don't have breathing room, e.g., only 2 or 3 days left to your trial period, exchange it for a new one. That's the best advice I can offer after closely monitoring this issue since the product's launch.

Keep in touch.

>>> I will leave it the way it is for now and see if it does it again.

Do yourself a favor. Uninstall LauncherPro now (notice I wrote "uninstall," not "disable.") This will go a long way in your quest to isolate the problem, and it's not a must-have app. If it shuts down after doing this exchange the device since you're within your 30 days. Captivate Keep Alive is for folks beyond the initial trial period.

If people rely on you in emergencies or you are the recipient of otherwise important calls, random shutdowns are not something to play with.

Don't be stubborn. ;)

Damn I bought it on 9/31 and just checked my build date, Its 7/15...its insane...I have already ordered a replacement phone...this one has wierd battery problems. I experienced shut down just once.

But today my phone got dischaged fully. I plugged it to USB charging...started it fater 10 mins. showed me 27% battery. I downloaded couple of apps from Market..with USB still plugged in charging state. The battery went down to 25%...

Immediatly called Amazon to replace this phone.

So something weird happened last night. My battery was about 25% or more charged (it was still blue) and I went to bed. When I woke up (after about 8 hours) the phone was switched off. I tried restarting it but it restarted and shutdown again immediately and the battery icon showed it was totally discharged. I plugged the phone for charge, restarted it and the charging started from 23%!!! I did install LauncherPro (free one) but after reading this thread I'm gonna uninstall it.

This is the 3rd replacement I got (end of August) and it's the first time this has occurred. My 1st phone did not die at all, the 2nd one did die once and I had to take out the battery to restart it.

If they're associated with full charges..has anyone who has experienced this problem try to get a spare battery and external charger and just swap the batteries insteading of plugging the charger to the phone? Not sure if that would do anything..just something to eliminate..maybe an overheating thing or something being overlooked?

I'm running JH7, rooted and running Ryan's Lag Fix. No LauncherPro.

2 shutdowns, since I bought the phone in August (first one was after my 30 days were up). Both shutdowns occurred over night, after fully charging the phone and unplugging it. Installed Captivate Keep Alive, hasn't shut down since.

No other point, other than adding to the bulk of information.

EDIT: Oh yeah, also I always keep the phone plugged in for an additional period of time, after it says "fully charged", because it really isn't. If I unplug it at that point, the battery state always goes to 99%. If I leave it plugged in a little longer, it will display as 100% when I unplug.

From the author of Captivate Keep Alive:

"...all it's doing is holding a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK WakeLock until the battery % is below the threshold you specify. The WakeLock is held by a service that manages the notification and receives the battery percent from a BroadcastReceiver."

All indications are that this app works well for individuals whose shutdowns are high-charge related.
