Rolle3k over at the XDA fourms has cracked the new youtube 2.2 for install on 2.1 here is a link.

[MOD] Youtube 'Gingerbread' ported to Eclair - xda-developers

Hiya,

due to my brother not having the luck of having Froyo on his phone I took a look at it and hacked the newst YouTube app to work with Eclair. I had to remove two calls and add android.util.base64 which was introduced with Froyo. However, it should work flawlessly. If you encounter any problems, feel free to post here along with a little description and if possible a logcat dump of the exception.

Old Download:

You have to remove the default YouTube app before you can install this one over.

Using ADB Shell this should just work:
adb remount
adb shell rm system/app/YouTube.apk
adb uninstall com.google.android.youtube

then you can just install it over using the package manager or with adb (adb install YouTube_signed.apk).

Hope this helps, enjoy the re-designed Youtube app!

nice, definately works.

Code:
C:\android\sdk\tools>adb remount
remount failed: Operation not permitted

//can someone please tell me what exactly this does and why it doesnt work.

C:\android\sdk\tools>adb shell
$ su
su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
# rm system/app/YouTube.apk
rm system/app/YouTube.apk
rm failed for system/app/YouTube.apk, No such file or directory

//cus im using apps2SD

# rm system/sd/app/YouTube.apk
rm system/sd/app/YouTube.apk
# uninstall com.google.android.youtube
uninstall com.google.android.youtube
uninstall: not found

//why did this not work?

i then went onto my phone and uninstalled com.google.android.youtube from astro then installed the new youtube.apk file and it worked perfectly.

Thats what happened to me too at first. From home screen, Menu-->Setting-->Applications-->Manage Applications. click on com.google.android.youtube and uninstall. then try installing the new signed_youtube.apk file with astro again.

Yeah its definitely much cleaner, the widget as well. Additionally you can browse by category, upload to youtube, and view your channel. I would say the new version is infinitely better than the old one. Definitely worth the 5 mins to upgrade.

One thing that does suck is since the current ROMs (velocity and raptor) both include the old version you'll have to re-do the uninstall/install whenever you do a factory reset to flash a different rom.

When I try to login to my account I get a bunch of random characters for the letters. It used to happen on my old youtube app which is why I deleted it. I am running velocity .3 anyone having similar issues? It won't connect after i login to my account it gives me a network error, when I log out it works fine. To Install it I just installed through tattachapkinstaller after uninstalling old youtube app, which worked fine to install.

Just-to-be-clear:

It DOES work,

BUT

It force closes after about 5 or so uses.

The differences is mainly that it has a new UI, you can see comment's, related videos, and info while still watching the video (along with vertical support), and everything is horizontal switched instead of vertical options.

Dont know what I am doing different but it has always worked flawlessly for me. I love it.
I use it all the time. I have since this thread came out.
See just look above I was asking what is so much better about it. LOL

Works flawlessly, thanks for the port!

I was having a bit of issues getting it to install but I managed to figure it out by doing this:

Use Root Explorer, navigate to /system/app, click "mount r/w", delete the YouTube.apk file then click "mount r/o" then close Root Explorer.
Go into your phone's Settings - Applications - Manage Applications and start scrolling down untill you find "com.google.android.youtube" and uninstall that.
Finally just use your file manager of choice and install "signed_YouTube.apk"
It should be installed successfully.:D

Hi Everyone
I'm new and have just bought a Scroll 7" for Xmas for my daughter (well for me really but only after 7pm when she is in bed!).
I originally got a POV Mobbi 7" but it was pants so sent it back.
I cannot get youtube to work. All I ever get is "Cannot display video". Interestingly the Mobbii had the same problem. The Mobbi didnt have the official youtube app though. I had to install non app market youtube alternatives on that.
My internet isn't fabulous (2.5MB) and I thought it could be down to that?
I've spoken to Storage Options and they've never seen the issue and can't reproduce it.
I've read bits to suggest I should clear the youtube cache from within the application settings menu. However, youtube is not listed in that menu. Only the 3rd party apps i've installed are there.
Please help me! I am getting close to throwing in the river!

By the way, I'm tempted to install this youtube version but am worried about having to delete the previous version. I'm not that techie and am worried I'll end upo voiding my warranty. If it goes pear shaped, will a factory reset get me out of trouble?

No it won't But you should make a back up before you do anything. Also download the .apk file of the original You tube app. I am sure if you ask around someone has it.
I recommend rooting your phone with z4root if you have not then downloading Rom Manager and flashing amonra recovery 1.2.5 after that make a backup of your phone. Now you can feel confident trying new things because you have everything all saved and you can keep trying.

However if your runnin stock right now I believe your going to have to do a few things in order to even be able to uninstall you tube.. I believe that is correct. If somebody else knows better please correct me.
