Root Newb question concerning rooting my X

I have searched this forum and changed my title several different ways trying to find a thread (using the "Here are the similar threads we found:" option) on this question. Why root? I am not a developer and outside of having some stock apps from Verizon I don't want or use, I cannot find a reason that I should root. But when I get on any of these forums the Root threads are front and center.

So have pity on the guy stepping up from his Blackberry Curve dependency and is still deep deep deep in the learning curve here, and offer some advice. Thanks!

1. Wireless Tether
2. Ability to remove bloatware
3. Ability to install custom themes and ROM's to change the look

4. Overclocking/underclocking
5. Install apps that give you far more control over your phone. (Cache clearing, flashlight, widget locker has a command for oc'ers, etc)

Why did I root? So I can make my phone better than yours. That simple. Its like buying aftermarket parts for my truck...I have to customize everything
