Thinking about moving from DROID to Droid X, is it worth it?

Currently love the Droid, but was impressed with the weight and screen size of the X....

Question whether it is worth it.

Is it really only running 2.1? Also, I found out that it can't be tethered for free. Are there any other issues that I should know before making the move?

Droid X got its update to 2.2 about a month ago, so no at 2.1.

DroidX's hardware is much better than Droid, and for software, the official released the 2.2 updates.

In my opinion, it worth.

It can be tethered wirelessly with root. Without root It can be tethered through PdaNET for a one time payment of about $20 bucks, and then free from that point on. You can actually use PdaNET for free for about 15 days, and then it will stop letting you access secure websites, but still give you access to all non-secure sites.

Of course whether or not it's worth it is subjective. Personally, I would say absolutely. My first foray into Android was on a Droid 1 for three days. My DX is an altogether better device in just about every aspect. Bigger, faster, more powerful... what's not to love?

The X now runs FroYo, and it's been rooted so I don't really see why you couldn't run Wifi Tether on it. I think it's a great phone. I'm personally saving my upgrade until January-March to see what's coming. If you still love your Droid, why not wait a while to see what's coming after CES? I realize there's always something better coming, but now that the 1GHz processors have been the standard for a while, along with a bunch of 4 inch to 4.3 inch screens, why not see what the next one upper will be? Anyway, I'm sure if you switch you'll love the X. It's a great phone.

Having bought my Droid on day 2, I'm considering the same switch. My main concern is the size difference. I had a Blackberry Curve with an Otterbox case for a while and found it too uncomfortable to hold as a phone for any length of time, and the Droid X appears to be just as wide on its own. A secondary concern is the accessory cost - 2 car docks and 1-2 deck docks - but that's something I need to work out myself.

Does anyone here find the X too big or awkward?

Yea the Droid X is worth it.

I originally owned a blackberry…I was getting tired of my blackberry fast and I tried out the first moto droid and did not like it. Sure I loved so many things about it, but all in all it wasn’t the phone for me. This time I decided to try out the droid x and I don’t feel like I made a mistake at all, I absolutely love this phone.

The size?! My man, I thought the same as you originally. When I had the Droid and held the DX, I presumed that I could never use a phone that 'big'. After playing with it for 30 mins, making the purchase, and now using it for a couple months, I can't believe that I ever thought it was large. It's a great screen and very thin. In fact, when holding the original Droid, I can't believe that I ever used anything that small. Crazy.

Aside from the Droid X's inability to hold a 3g signal (I don't think the original Droid has that problem.), I think it's worth it.

Most people don't have this problem, my 3g signal is amazing after the froyo update.

I'm on day 2.5 with my phone. I say .5 because I received my phone in the evening and was experiencing issues with receiving texts and calls (Verizon issue, not a Droid X issue).

In any case, I don't think it's too big or awkward. I came from a Blackjack II. Because it's so thin, it doesn't seem all that big. A friend of mine has a Droid and I consider her phone big. I guess it's the weight.

I went from a tiny LG Chocolate phone to the DX. Long story short.. the phone being about 2x the size and being a touchscreen was anything but hard to manage. After a few days of using the phone, you won't even notice the size, and you'll actually probably enjoy the large real estate.

3G works great and doesn't get dropped at all. You can tether for free and overclock, both with root.

The Droid X is 100% worth it. I currently have the Droid X, the Droid Incredible and the Fascinate. The Droid X is easily the best device on Verizon and possibly the best device out period. If you want something smaller the Droid Incredible is also a great device. Stay away from the Fascinate at all costs.

The Fascinate isn't bad if you aren't against rooting. Admittedly, it is a bad device for seemingly having to play a gambling game of getting one that doesn't have any of the issues plaguing the device (lag, call quality, gps).

I am on my 5th Fascinate since release and I have tested at least 5 others. Every single one has had a useless GPS, poor call quality, poor battery life, and poor reception. I am holding on to the one I currently have in the hopes that 2.2 will fix some of the issue. Even if the Fascinate worked properly the Droid X is still the better device and the one I will continue to use every day.

It's all about conditioning. Remember cordless phones? The Droid X is way smaller than a cordless phone. We didn't think anything about how big our cordless phone was, we were just used to them. When cell phones first hit the street they were much bigger than or old cordless phone's were. Then they got smaller and smaller and smaller. The Droid X isn't a freakin shoe box or anything, it's actually no bigger than just about anything you could get pre-2000. It's just that we've all been conditioned now to think they should be these tiny little things.

But the culture is changing again, were over the 'smaller is better' phase. You can tell because back in 2005 nobody wanted a Blackberry because they were so HUMONGOUS!!! Now Blackberries don't scare anyone. And you can be sure 4.3 inch screens won't be considered big in a few years. They will probably be the norm, while 6 & 7 inch screens come available.

It's al about conditioning.

I went from the original droid to the droid x and the difference is amazing. I do miss the physical keyboard and am sometimes annoyed by swype and the multi touch keyboard but the screen and faster processor make up for he loss very nicely.
