Convince me to update my HTC Desire to 2.2?

Hey guys!

I've just recieved my HTC Desire 2 days ago. Prior to purchasing it, I didn't know that I will have problems with saving apps to sd card.
Right now, although I'm trying my very best not to get madly dissapointed with this expensive phone, I'm really getting frustrated with deleting apps because of the phone storage getting low.

Now I've heard that you can root this phone and upgrade it to 2.2 and all these problems will be solved. However, some people wouldn't recommend it because they said the phone will not work well afterward. So I'm really, quite frankly, scared of breaking my newly bought phone. I've really saved up so much to buy this phone so I hope you understand how I would feel if after rooting/upgrading it, the phone breaks down. :(

But after browsing through forums in this site, there are also other people who successfully rooted/upgraded their phones and their phones still work well.

Three more questions:
1) Can I upgrade to 2.2 without rooting my phone?
2) If I upgraded my phone to 2.2 without rooting it, can I save/move apps to my sd card?
3) Can I still "downgrade" my phone to 2.1 if my phone's not working well in 2.2?

What's you advice?

Thanks guys!

That's one of the few flaws with the Desire, it lacks internal memory for apps like the iPhone. It should have had 1gig of storage, plus the SD card. But as long as you don't go crazy installing lots of apps, it works just fine. Just download what you really need.

Who says that? Froyo v2.2 is a big improvement over v2.1, more than the .1 update would indicate. It's faster, has more features, better RF performance, etc. It's definitely a nice update. I can't speak to your carrier's version, but the generic version is nice.
1) Can I upgrade to 2.2 without rooting my phone?
Yes. I have a generic and unbranded version on my Desire and it's not rooted.
2) If I upgraded my phone to 2.2 without rooting it, can I save/move apps to my sd card?
Yes. But not all of them, just the apps that have been updated to support moving apps to the card. There are a lot of apps that will not move yet because the developer hasn't done it yet. There is a work around to move most non-system apps to the SD card, but it involves installing the SDK toolkit to change the default location for apps to the SD card. It comes with some risks if you move the wrong apps, but you can move them back to the phone if they become unstable.
3) Can I still "downgrade" my phone to 2.1 if my phone's not working well in 2.2?
If you use the carrier OTA update, you may or may not be able to find a downgrade file to go back to what you have now. You won't be able to just click "undo" or anything simple like that. But there is a generic unbranded downgrade method that will work, but it's not carrier specific and the carrier MAY not honour warranty work if needed in the future.

I would run the update...I'm sure it'll be a nice improvement. I updated as soon as I found the generic update file on this forum and haven't looked back!
:D
